About the Position
The Commercial Sales Representative is primarily responsible for identifying and securing solar project opportunities (new business) and serving as a key member of the project team throughout the project life cycle with a focus on managing client expectations to maximize the customer experience.
This role is critical to the success of Company’s business strategy and provides a unique opportunity to contribute Solar Gain’s reputation, earnings and growth objectives.
This role requires knowledge of the local communities in which we serve. Physical presence in Northern California is a must.
Scope of Responsibilities (include but not limited to)
Business Development (75%)
Drive revenue and earnings by identifying and securing higher-margin solar project opportunities.
- Implement a proven business development process for commercial projects, with a focus on strategic industry segments, geographic markets and marketing channels that will drive revenue (near-term and backlog) and optimize profit. o Sales Activity: Generate 15-20 viable commercial leads per month, and present 3-5 project proposals per month. o Secure at least 1 $250k commercial solar project within first 180 days. Ongoing, secure $500k in commercial solar projects quarterly.
- Salesman will be expected to generate their own customers and leads to sell to, including cold calling, networking, site visits, etc.
- Effectively communicate project plans, challenges, and necessary outcomes.
- Work with the design and engineering team to develop comprehensive proposals with accurate project components, cost estimates and pricing.
- Present proposals to customers, and work with customers and sources of financing to select best solution for customer.
- Develop and negotiate prime Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) contracts and close sales.
Project Development (20%)
Manage all aspects of solar projects including client expectations, project controls, reporting and the project team throughout the project life cycle.
- Prepare project bid documents including internal review documentation for system size, layout, and production; project budget and customer pricing; customer proposal with scope and exclusions, draft contracts.
- Work with the design and engineering team to ensure project designs meet or exceed contractual requirements, support obtaining permits and approvals required for each solar project.
- Work with local utilities and jurisdictional authorities to ensure accurate interconnections and utility protocols/procedures as well as construction and setback requirements. Work with vendors to obtain best pricing for capital equipment.
- Work with operations team to ensure construction schedule meets customer expectations and that change orders are communicated clearly and timely.
- Be present, as appropriate and necessary, on job sites to support effective client interfacing throughout a project.
Process Improvement (5%)
Improve operational efficiency through all phases of business development and project execution.
- Documenting and analyze existing business processes.
- Identify best practices in process improvements and implement throughout organization.
- Act as the project manager to develop and implement process improvement projects.
- Report and communicate process improvement results to the management team.

Candidate Requirements
- The foundation of this role is based in connecting, building relationships, networking, and selling to small, medium, and large business owners across a variety of industries. People with this type of sales background will excel at this role. Commercial Real estate, insurance, energy efficiency products, etc.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in sales and marketing roles. An ideal candidate will have experience selling medium scale commercial solar projects, with knowledge of solar project development process and phases of the sales life cycle (pre-construction, construction and post- construction)
- Ability to put together and present a customer proposal. Good presentation skills and ability to connect and communicate with customers.
- Understanding of commercial solar PV system design and ability to develop solar system proposals including size, layout, production requirements and cost.
- Ability to understand and communicate technical information like solar incentives, regulatory and tax environments, financing and energy cost structure to customers.
- Proven track record of selling commercial solar projects or other similar B2B sales
- Be a self-starter with a strong work ethic and able to work with a high level of autonomy.
- Ability to think critically and to solve problems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Bachelor’s degree or other higher level education preferred.
- Proficient with solar proposal software and tools such as Helioscope and Energy Tool Base. Also, proficient with Excel and other applicable software and apps.

Pay Range: $120,000 to 150,000+ per year depending upon sales
