Howdens are looking for a Commercial Finance Analyst to join our busy Commercial Finance team. This is a permanent role based at either our Howden site in East Yorkshire, or our site in Raunds Northamptonshire, with occasional travel between the two sites. Reporting to the Senior Category Finance Manager, the role offers the opportunity for a part qualified or newly qualified accountant to join the business in a commercial accounting role, working closely with category, pricing and other commercial finance teams.
As Commercial Finance Analyst, you will provide support to both the Category Finance Team and the Pricing Team. Providing reporting and analysis on key areas of margin, commercial planning and pricing, taking ownership to ensure that the financials are accurate and underlying assumptions are robust. As a confident communicator you will clearly and concisely support the wider business understanding of margin and the sales and margin impact of key initiatives such as pricing, promotions and innovation.
What will I be doing?
- Support the Category Finance Teams with the budgeting and forecasting process for sales, transfer margin and purchase price variance
- Lead the long-term strategic planning process, creating and owning the model and engaging with the category teams to capture key initiatives driving longer term sales and margin
- Support the category teams with the forecast financial impact of NPI (innovation) proposals, ensuring numbers are accurate and assumptions are robust. Summarise and challenge key numbers and present findings and conclusions back to senior leaders to ensure informed decisions are made
- Provide reporting and analysis on promotional activity to help stakeholders understand performance, including the impact on sales, margin and footfall, to help devise future promotional strategy
- Own and develop new and existing pricing reports, and provide ad hoc analysis to understand the performance and impact of specific pricing action
- Ensure new and promotional prices and costs are correctly uploaded into SAP and K8 (Depot EPOS system)
- Produce periodic reporting on key levels of margin (ie Transfer Margin, Transfer Margin including PPV, Gross Margin and Delivered Margin) and share with relevant stakeholders, providing commentary on key drivers vs last year and latest forecast
- In conjunction with Senior Category Finance Manager, provide reporting and analysis on Group Gross Margin. Producing YoY bridges and commentary on key drivers, to support the wider business understanding of margin performance
- Finance Business Partner to Director of ESG to ensure strong financial and budget control, and provide analysis and challenge on the cost/benefit of key initiatives
- Lead and consolidate the standard costing process, taking full ownership of the model and engaging with the relevant category analysts to ensure standard costs are accurate and complete
- Manage the financial elements of the supplier compliance agenda, providing updates on the D&B status for the supplier portfolio and supporting the Supplier Compliance Manager with ad hoc analysis on specific suppliers
- Build strong working relationships across the Finance function (Group, Commercial, Trade)
- Provide analytical support for projects and key business initiatives on an ad hoc basis
What we are looking for:
- Part qualified, or newly qualified CIMA, ACCA, ACA
- Strong Digital and IT capability (strong Microsoft Office skills including Excel and experience of SAP beneficial)
- Ability to manage and analyse data and draw-out insights and key messages/actions
- Capable of presenting complex data concisely to senior leaders within the business
- Experience of working in a matrix organisation beneficial
- Resilience, self-starter, drive and energy
- Excellent communication, inter-personal and influencing skills
