The College
Oxford International College Brighton is an international day and boarding college opening in Ovingdean, Brighton in September 2023 for students aged 13-18. For the right candidate, this is an exciting and highly rewarding opportunity to join a new College and work within Nord Anglia’s world-class international network of schools.
The Role
The role of a College Nurse deals effectively with illnesses or injuries for staff and pupils as well as to promote health and wellbeing for all. The College nurse will use research-based practice in the planning, delivery and evaluation of nursing interventions throughout the whole college.
Continued strategic development of the medical provision is carried out in line with best practice guidelines from the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council), Boarding Schools Association (BSA) and OFSTED. We have a Health Centre at the College, and the Nurse will play a key role in running this.
Administrative Duties
- Ensure the smooth and efficient running of the Medical Department, ensuring effective operating systems are in place.
- Assist with appropriate development and continual application of protocols.
- Maintain medical records accurately, confidentially and safely.
- Keep nursing records to the standard required by the NMC, ensuring the accurate and rapid retrieval of information.
- Record dispensing of drugs following drug protocols.
- Maintain general office procedures.
- Where appropriate, attend staff briefings, staff training days, staff meetings and safeguarding meetings.
- Ensure that all policies and protocols are recorded in writing in compliance with the National Minimum Boarding Standards.
Clinical Duties
The successful applicant will provide appropriate medical services, primarily to students (and to a lesser extent to staff and visitors). These will include:
- Organising and running surgery times where students attend for routine medication and simple nursing needs.
- Managing pupils with chronic illness (e.g., diabetes) and implementing plans with regard to their long-term care.
- Working closely with Catering Staff regarding dietary intolerances or allergies.
- Assisting in arranging for boarding pupils to attend any medical, dental or other health appointments as necessary.
- Assessing, implementing and evaluating in-patient care of students admitted to the sick bays in the Health Centre
- Providing first aid and emergency care/treatment as necessary, including managing injuries on the school campus (with support from First Aiders in each section of the school) and referring as appropriate, i.e. GP or hospital.
- Maintaining and stocking first aid kits including first aid provision for the Boarding Houses, in liaison with the Head of Boarding and Houseparents.
- Supporting the Educational Visits Coordinator and the leaders of school trips to care for individual students (e.g. discussing medical information as needed, providing medical kits and supporting arrangements/ training for the medical care of the students on the trip).
- Provide qualified nursing care for boarders.
- Provide training where relevant and appropriate to college staff on topics such as anaphylaxis, management of diabetes and seizures etc.
- Producing and completing the relevant paperwork and informing the Principal, teachers, other staff and parents, as appropriate
- Provide instruction in the use of emergency medication that may be needed by particular pupils
- Maintaining the clinical area ensuring medication is clearly labelled and in date
- Managing the safe storage and administration of prescribed medication
- Keeping records of injuries/sicknesses in the clinic
- Communicating with parents regarding their children’s injury/sickness
- Informing parents of reported infectious diseases in college
- Oversee the College medical centre
Preventative Health
- Follow good practice and specific directives on immunisation procedures relevant to the school population and individuals.
- Operate procedures for infectious disease control.
- Implement and follow procedures for the safe disposal of clinical waste.
- Be up-to-date in the recommended safe storage, usage and disposal of medical supplies and drugs and inform staff of latest changes and protocol.
- Implement high standards of hygiene and tidiness in the treatment room and ensure that other staff operate by similarly high standards.
- Carry out drug tests at the request of the Principal and in line with the School Drugs Policy.
Health Education
- Promote Health Education throughout the school and, where appropriate, support educational sessions for students (e.g. linked with Personal Development programme).
- Keep up-to-date with current health promotion initiatives.
Pastoral
- The College Nurse may be the first port of call for any student in emotional or personal crisis. The Nurse’s professional listening skills will enable him/her to provide initial relief and they will then be able to decide whether a referral to a counsellor or another member of the pastoral team is expedient.
- Act in accordance with the school’s Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy and liaise with the Safeguarding Team across all sections of the school.
- Support the Head of Pastoral Care and Wellbeing (who is also the Designated Safeguarding Lead) and the wider Pastoral Team in the provision of pastoral care by liaising closely about issues affecting individuals and the whole community.
- Provide support/advice to staff where appropriate.
Health and Safety
- Contribute to record keeping of all accidents and liaise closely with the school’s Health and Safety Officer about the correct recording of accidents and injuries in accordance with Government legislation and school policy.
- Attend Health and Safety meetings as appropriate (once or twice/ term).
Internal liaison
- Keep in close contact with boarding, teaching and support staff as necessary.
- Meet with the Head of Pastoral Care/ DSL and liaise appropriately to ensure the highest possible standards of medical and pastoral care in the college
External liaison
- Maintain a close working relationship with the local GP surgery and pharmacy.
- Liaise as required with external agencies.

Health and Safety
- Reporting of preventable injuries to senior management
- Reporting of Health and Safety issues to senior management
- Preparing of “Medical Alert” information sheets ensuring teaching staff are aware of any special medical needs of the children they teach
- Prepare detailed care plans for children with potentially serious medical conditions e.g. epilepsy, hydrocephalus, severe allergies, heart conditions
- Reporting of accidents
- To monitor the progress of a potential pandemic e.g. “Avian Flu” and report to senior management any major developments
- Organising vaccinations in school if needed
- Organising audiology assessments (by external specialists)
- Organising visual assessments (by external specialists)
Qualifications/Training
- Professional nursing qualification
- Current training in the medical area
Experience/Knowledge
- Minimum of 2 years’ nursing experience
- Capable of attending to both minor and major medical issues
- Appropriate medical knowledge e.g. Asthma, Epilepsy, Diabetes
- Managing the safe storage and administration of prescribed medication
- Management of EpiPens and Ventolin pumps
- Experience of working with children and adults
- School working experience

Global academic results
The 2021-2022 school year was one of the strongest ever in terms of Nord Anglia Education’s academic results. For the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, our students achieved a 35.1 global point average, far exceeding the global average of 31.9. A third of the students earned a perfect score of 45. In the A-levels, our students achieved 60.5% of grades at A*-A, along with 77.3% at A*-B. The group’s latest IGCSE student cohort, consisting of 2,351 students across 41 Nord Anglia schools, achieved an outstanding set of results, with 52.8% of grades at 9 – 7 for the year and 90.8% at 9 – 4.
