If you offer expertise in behavioural science and developing behavioural insights, this position presents an exciting opportunity to join the CMA’s Behavioural Hub and help develop a better understanding of consumer issues and behaviour in the UK.

The CMA is the UK’s world-leading competition authority. Our purpose is to make sure competition works in consumers’ favour, and businesses treat their customers fairly. The Behavioural Hub supports the CMA’s mission to make markets work in the interests of consumers, businesses and the economy. The Hub work on studies and enforcement cases in close cooperation with economists, lawyers and other professionals, providing behavioural insights input and analysis, and deliver cutting-edge research into business practices and consumer behaviour. Our analyses have played an important role in several CMA projects, such as the CMA’s recent market study into mobile ecosystems.

Job description

As Behavioural Insights Advisor, you will be involved in a variety of applied behavioural projects to address competition and consumer issues across UK markets. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the building of capacity for qualitative, quantitative and experimental research projects
  • Identifying and analysing consumer and firm behaviours
  • Contributing to cross cutting publications on key behavioural themes
  • Maintaining and communicating a consistent and valuable behavioural offer (e.g. consultancy, capability building, evidence building and research)
  • Working with CMA data scientists, technology insight specialists, economists and market researchers to shape joint analytical / research projects

In addition to doing impactful and valuable work, we will support your development as a professional and provide the opportunity to forge new international and academic networks.

Person specification

  • Experience of delivering behavioural insight projects: gaining buy-in for behavioural work from others, producing behavioural analysis of problems, diagnosing where behavioural issues may be relevant, and advising on the design and testing of solutions.
  • A good understanding of existing behavioural literature, and experience in distilling this rapidly to develop actionable insights or recommendations to influence others’ decision making.
  • Effective stakeholder management, communication and influencing skills, including helping to produce high-quality outputs (e.g. presentations, publications) suitable for and to influence non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with delivering or supporting research. Methods could include online experiments, lab experiments, field trials, natural experiments, behavioural design, qualitative and quantitative methods.

If you’re already a civil servant being appointed on level transfer, you’ll retain your existing terms, including annual leave. Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills.

As part of the application process you will be asked to complete a CV, personal statement and an online application form. Further details about application requirements are listed on the application form.

The selection process will comprise of the sift (CV & application review) and an interview. Interviews will be either conducted virtually, by Microsoft Teams.

In the sift all elements of the essential criteria listed under Person Specification (above and in the attached role profile) will be considered.

The sift will take place week commencing 12 June 2023.

If your application is successful you will be invited to attend an interview. You will be notified via email to log-in to your Civil Service Account and book your interview slot. You will be sent an email with full details of your arrangements for interview.

Interviews will be held week commencing 03 July 2023

The first part of the interview will comprise of a presentation, details of which will be forwarded in advance of the interview. The second part of the interview will be a 45 minute -1 hour panel interview where you will be asked questions based on the Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills outlined in the role profile.
