Are you passionate about technology and its impact on society? Do you want to play a role in shaping how we think about the regulation of data and technology markets and the activities of technology companies? If so, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is looking for an intern to join their Data, Technology and Analytics (DaTA) unit.
It’s a fascinating time to be at the heart of competition and consumer protection as our lives become increasingly digital and as we grapple as a society with the unique power of large technology firms. This internship is a valuable opportunity to be at the forefront of investigating and understanding how firms use technology and to develop your knowledge of competition policy and digital regulation.
This internship is for 6 months.
Job description
As Data & Technology Insights Intern, you will have the opportunity to work with a multi-disciplinary team on cases across the CMA with a digital focus. You will also contribute to horizon scanning exercises on emerging technologies and issues in digital markets, as well as delivering written or verbal briefings and reports on key areas of technology or technological issues of interest.
In addition, you will be involved in contributing to key digital markets work including helping develop policy and the establishment of the Digital Markets Unit (DMU). You will also have the opportunity to contribute to the design, development, and delivery of internal and external events with a wide range of stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
- Working with other members of multi-disciplinary teams on cases across the CMA with a digital focus e.g. enforcement cases, market studies or merger control involving technology firms.
- Contributing to futures and horizon scanning exercises on emerging technologies and issues in digital markets.
- Delivering written or verbal briefings and reports on key areas of technology or technological issues of interest.
- Contributing to key digital markets work including helping develop policy and the establishment of the Digital Markets Unit (DMU).
- Contributing to the design, development and delivery of internal and external events with a wide range of stakeholders, such as panel events and symposiums for the CMA and the Digital Regulation Cooperation Forum (DRCF).
Person specification
- A qualification or research or project work experience in a relevant subject – this might be from a degree, or a research project or similar. (lead selection criteria)
- Demonstrable active interest in digital markets. (lead selection criteria)
- Knowledge of one or more areas of technologies. These might be specific technologies (e.g. AI / ML, cloud, search, privacy enhancing technologies) technologies, or you might have expertise in particular areas (such as web development, app development, cyber security, etc).
- Experience researching, synthesising and communicating complex information about technical subjects.
- Experience of working in a team effectively.

If you’re already a civil servant being appointed on level transfer, you’ll retain your existing terms, including annual leave. If you are being promoted you’ll receive either a 10% pay increase or the new grade minimum, whichever is the greater. Selection process details
As part of the application process you will be asked to complete a CV, personal statement and an online application form. Further details about application requirements are listed on the application form.
The selection process will comprise of the sift (CV & application review) and an interview. Arrangements for the interview will be enclosed in the invitation. Interviews will be either conducted either virtually, by Microsoft Teams, or in-person at a CMA office.
An initial sift based on criteria 1 and 2 (Lead Criteria) may be held if a large number of applications are received. If your application progresses to a full sift, all elements of the essential criteria listed under Person Specification (above and in the attached role profile) will then be considered.
The sift will take place week commencing 09 May 2023
If your application is successful you will be invited to attend an interview. You will be notified via email to log-in to your Civil Service Account and book your interview slot. You will be sent an email with full details of your arrangements for interview.
Interviews will be held between 25 and 31 May 2023
The first part of the interview will comprise of a presentation, details of which will be forwarded in advance of the interview. The second part of the interview will be a 45 minute -1 hour panel interview where you will be asked questions based on the Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills outlined in the role profile.
