About the role

The Cloud Operations Engineer is a mid-level role, reporting to the CloudOps Manager and is responsible for the on-going deployment, management and maintenance of development and production environments within Azure public cloud infrastructure across both our corporate and customer estates.

Working within the CloudOps team, alongside colleagues from Enterprise Architecture, Compliance, Information Security, Customer IT and various Product teams, the Cloud Operations Engineer drives quality and repeatability into their work through a mixture of DevOps methodologies and Site Reliability Engineering.

You'll create consistent, automated environments across all tiers, proactively test and tune all aspects of the infrastructure, streamline CI/CD processes, monitor and respond to system alerts and continually work to optimise the performance, security, reliability and cost management elements of our systems.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Proactively monitoring infrastructure and environments, taking steps to improve stability, reliability and performance whilst always remaining cost-conscious.
  • Contributing towards building an organisation-wide Site Reliability Engineering culture, by sharing principles, approaches, best practices, documentation and code with colleagues across the business.
  • Maintaining existing and creating new IaC templates and deploying new infrastructure and environments in accordance with Architecture, Compliance, Operational and Security requirements.
  • Troubleshooting complicated, cross-platform issues involving Network, IaaS, PaaS, Operating System, Application, Database and other components, taking ownership through to resolution.
  • Documenting your knowledge of environments and individual systems as you acquire it over time, creating runbooks and ensuring critical system information is readily available to colleagues across the business.
  • Seeking opportunities to apply automation to any tasks performed manually, following through to implementation.
  • Keeping up-to date with security best-practice and proactively identifying, diagnosing and solving complex security issues.
You'll have:
  • Previous experience in a similar role, championing Cloud Operations, DevOps and SRE principles, approaches and best practices.
  • Experience in environments subject to regulatory compliance and Information Security standards (e.g. SOC, ISO27001 and Cyber Essentials).
  • Strong planning and organisational skills, including the ability to manage several workstreams simultaneously, balancing business priorities and quality.
  • Clear and concise communication skills, to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • High literacy in information technology concepts and theory.
  • An eagerness to learn and the ability to instil this in others.

Skills and experience

You'll have technical skills in the following:
  • Enterprise Agreement, Tenant and Subscription management.
  • Cost analysis and Reservation management.
  • Active Directory Identity and Access Management, including Role-Based Access Control.
  • Virtual Networking features, including:
    • Hub and Spoke topologies, Micro-segmentation and Zero-trust.

  • Infrastructure as a Service features, including:
    • Virtual Machines (Linux, and Windows).
  • Platform as a Service features, including:
    • Key Vault, Storage, Databases (SQL, and Postgres).
    • App Service Plans and Web / API / Function Apps.
    • Kubernetes and Container Registry.
    • PowerBI.
  • Logging, Monitoring and Alerting, including:
    • Monitor, Alerts, Dashboards, Sentinel.
    • Diagnostics Settings, Log Analytics, KQL.

Zellis is the leading provider of payroll and HR solutions for the UK & Ireland. Together with Benefex and Moorepay we form the Zellis Group, serving a vast array of companies across every vertical and industry. Our purpose is to power exceptional employee experiences so that our customers and their people do better.

We have over 50 years of heritage and industry experience – and we’ve been ahead of the curve throughout. More than half a century ago, we were founded as Peterborough Data Processing. Quite a lot has changed since then – not least our name. In 2018, the UK and Ireland division was sold to Bain Capital and now we operate as a standalone company, Zellis. After acquiring Benefex, we’re now even better equipped to serve the complex needs of our customers.

Our vision is to be the clear leader in pay, reward, analytics, and people experiences. We’re proud of our culture and we work hard to create an environment where people want to join, belong to, and be part of a progressive organisation.
