Phase Biolabs is a biotech startup developing carbon upcycling technology to convert industrial CO2 into useful products.
We’re on a mission to decarbonise heavy industry and upcycle more than 1 gigaton of CO2 by 2050. We’re working on optimising the microorganisms that catalyse the conversion CO2 into chemicals and e-fuels as well as scaling our gas fermentation bioprocess.

CLONING SCIENTIST
YOUR ROLE
You will be part of the multi-disciplinary R&D team and will contribute to bio-engineering efforts by providing cloning support across several projects in protein, genetic and strain engineering. You will build and test genetic parts and systems that will be implemented into our biocatalysts. The work will be varied and dynamic, with plenty of opportunities for growth.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Undergraduate or MSc with demonstrable experience or PhD degree in biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, synthetic biology, microbiology, molecular biology, or related field.

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST:
Have experience working in a microbiology laboratory
Be able to plan and execute experiments independently
Have extensive experience working with DNA and E. coli
Be familiar with a variety of molecular biology & cloning techniques and workflows, including Gibson & Golden Gate assemblies
Be comfortable working on multiple projects simultaneously
Have experience managing and handling a large number of samples in parallel
PREFERED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with genetic modifications of microorganisms
Experience with NGS workflows and data analysis
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage your time, plan and execute your work independently
Plan work and record results accurately in an electronic lab notebook
Communicate with the rest of the bioengineering team to ensure good collaboration
Isolate different types of DNA using commercial kits
Design primers and cloning workflows using plasmid maps and successfully execute and verify its assembly
Adapt, develop and test new cloning techniques, troubleshoot cloning workflows
Prepare and store DNA parts and plasmids in virtual and lab databases
Contribute to general lab maintenance
PRACTICAL DETAILS:
The role is an on-site position based in Nottingham
Full-time, two-year contract with an option to extend
40 hours/week with flexible start time
28 days paid holiday
Salary £22,500 - £35,000 depending on experience

THE HIRING PROCESS:
The hiring process will consist of an initial CV screen. If successful you will be invited to a first interview (10-20 minutes) covering basic qualifying questions. After this, you will be invited to a second interview (45-60 minutes) where we will take a deep dive into your skills and experiences. Finally, we will invite you to a final interview (15-30 minutes) where we will find out more about you, your motivation and ambitions.
