Job description

We are looking for applications as a Principal Clinical Scientist to join our team in Automated Chemistry at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital Trust. The laboratories are based on both sites, which have a wide breadth of clinical specialties associated with two prestigious teaching hospitals including a separate Evelina children’s hospital.

The post-holder is expected to spend a proportion of their time dedicated to UKAS orientated activities, service development, technical and clinical validation of results. You will be responsible for the completion of tasks and deliver a fit-for-purpose medical laboratory service to achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care. You will also act as deputy for the Consultant Clinical Scientist.

As part of the ongoing transformation of core services across Synnovis, the post holder will be encouraged to build on and improve existing relationships in the Blood Sciences Laboratories, which will potentially include working cross-site where necessary. The post holder will also act as laboratory lead for the first trimester screening laboratory in the OSCAR clinic at St. Thomas’ Hospital, as well as participate in the Duty Biochemist rota and could attend MDTs on behalf of the Biochemistry department.

We will consider HCPC registered candidates who are about to undergo FRCPath part 1 examination and looking for the next step.

The successful applicant will participate in the Duty Biochemist rota providing interpretation of test results and clinical advice to both primary and secondary care teams. As a key member of the clinical and scientific team, the postholder will ensure provision of a clinically appropriate analytical and interpretative Biochemistry service of high quality and will be expected to be involved in all aspects of service delivery including teaching, audit, and clinical liaison. UKAS 15189 accreditation is currently held by the laboratory, and we are also accredited as a training laboratory for the IBMS specialist portfolio.

With a 24/7 service, the chemistry department has a test repertoire of approximately 130 assays and a corresponding output more than one million results per month. The post holder will be the lead scientist providing oversight of the send-aways service. You will work with internal and external colleagues to facilitate ongoing projects as well as future reorganisation and configuration of the service.

Currently a major transformation project is underway to go live in October 2023 when the laboratories are due to go live with a new Epic Beaker IT system. We are also transitioning our services going forward into 2023/24 and you will be instrumental in supporting the scientific activities associated with these projects. You may have the opportunity to work at multiple laboratory sites.

You will have a suite of learning opportunities available through The Synnovis Way Development programme, the Scientific Learning and Development Fund and the Synnovis Academy through which you can receive funding / support for advanced qualifications.

Through our Innovation Accelerator Fund, you can apply for finance to get that new innovative scientific project off the ground, and participate with the wider scientific community through symposiums, conferences and other peer group meetings.

As a Principal Clinical Scientist in Routine Chemistry, the post holder is involved in the provision of the routine analytical service and maintenance of the department’s UKAS accreditation. The post holder will be responsible for the completion of tasks and deliver a fit-for-purpose medical laboratory service to achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care, and resource management within Blood Sciences.

The post holder will primarily be involved with supporting projects to implement new analysers, you will contribute to the validation and verification process. The implementation of a new LIMS is the other major project you will have a significant role in. You will also gain invaluable experience by taking part in covering the Duty Biochemist rota.

Some essential criteria for the role:

  • First or second-class BSc degree in Clinical Biochemistry, Biomedical Science or a related subject.
  • MSc or equivalent in Clinical Biochemistry.
  • Part 1 examination of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists
  • Demonstration of participation in the Royal College of Pathologists CPD scheme, or equivalent
  • HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist.
  • Experience in routine and specialist Biochemistry and Endocrinology.
  • Able to conduct clinical and laboratory audits and present reports.
  • Able to analyse complex scientific data and present findings in writing within the laboratory.
  • Comprehensive understanding of analytical techniques, including undertaking complex analytical procedures.
  • Understanding of Quality Control and Assurance procedures.
  • Able to use and manipulate laboratory computer systems and standard computer software packages.
Some desirable criteria for the role:
  • Relevant PhD or an equivalent record of research publications.
  • Able to perform risk assessments on a variety of laboratory situations.
