Applications are invited for the post of two(2) North Middlesex University Hospital Clinical Teaching Fellows (CTF) working with UCL Medical School (UCLMS) students.
The Clinical Teaching Fellow posts have been established to develop the career of clinicians with interest in Medical Education.
The post holders will be expected to organize and participate in the delivery of teaching and assessments for medical students and support their learning while they are on their clinical placements at the Trust.
The posts are full time and available for one year.
At North Middlesex University Hospital:
- Liaise with junior doctors and consultants to arrange teaching in the clinical environment for medical students
- Supervise and oversee the learning of Year 4, 5 and 6 medical students from UCL whilst on clinical placement
- Develop and deliver tutorials, lectures and other educational sessions such as simulation training for medical students
- Arrange and coordinate medical student formative and summative CPSA exams (formerly known as OSCE)
- Provide pastoral support and academic guidance to students, including liaising with their educational supervisors
- Supervise junior doctors in their professional development as clinical teachers, through peer observation and feedback and support in roles such as FY1 and FY2 Teaching Leads
- Support faculty development including induction for new educational supervisors
Led by the Postgraduate Director of Medical Education (PGDME) and the Medical Education Manager (MEM), the department works towards improving and assuring the quality of both undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching and learning that is provided within the Trust and aims to improve the recognition of the Trust as a Centre of Excellence for lifelong learning, fostering a culture of enthusiasm for excellent teaching and learning among all grades of medical staff.
Medical Students come from UCL medical school, St George’s International Medical School in Grenada and as Electives from unaffiliated hospitals.
The successful candidates will have the responsibility of coordinating, as well as delivering a wide range of teaching to undergraduate medical students at UCL with the help of junior doctors and consultants in the hospital. The appointed CTFs will be expected to oversee the existing curriculum of teaching as well as bring new initiatives to the department. The CTFs will also be expected to organise and facilitate UCLMS formative and summative CPSA (formerly known as OSCE) exams held at NMUH.
The North Middlesex Hospital site is expanding and will become one of the fourth main sites of UCLMS at the end of August 2023. This will mean NMUH will receive a large number of year 4 students, alongside the current year 5 and 6 students. A key role of the CTFs will involve implementation and delivery of the year 4 UCLMS programme.
North Middlesex and UCL offer opportunities to their CTFs such as a position as an honorary UCL teaching fellow. The candidates will also be supported in their applications to the Foundation of Higher Education Academy and encouraged to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education, if desired. There is also support systems in place, in the form of a CTF network across all UCL sites. This network, along with the resources at North Middlesex, can also be used for educational and research projects.
2 posts are available for UCL Year 4 & Year 6 CTFs with differing roles but there is also a significant overlap in their tasks. Collaborative working and cross covering of responsibilities between CTFs are expected.
The CTF role is ideal for anyone with an interest in medical education who wishes to gain hands on experience in clinical teaching, simulation and curriculum and examination planning. It will also provide the successful applicants with opportunities for innovation in medical education.
