The Preventive Neurology Unit (PNU) is part of the Wolfson Institute of Population Health, which has a focus on academic discipline, research, the translation of research into public health strategies and their practical implementation – all dedicated to the reduction of disease and disability.

The PNU is active in the following research areas: Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and Dementia.

Job purpose

At the heart of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) is a clinical research scientist appointed to lead the project and act as the link between the academic team, consisting of a Consultant Neurologist/Clinical Professor and Consultant Neurologist at QMUL and the industrial partners, Charco Neurotech.

The clinical research scientist will have responsibility for undertaking a validation study of CUE1 device and working collaboratively to design a full intervention study. In order to deliver this project successfully, the applicant will be required to have a reasonable scientific experience in research and strong clinical background in PD.

The candidate must be able to communicate effectively with a range of different stakeholders, e.g. patients, academics and industrie partners.They will receive support and supervision in the role, drawing on the expertise and decision-making abilities of colleagues at Charco Neurotech and QMUL. The candidate is expected to participate in collaborative projects with suppliers, patients and research institutes.

The project will enable the growth of Charco Neurotech by validating the CUE1 device in a real-world clinical setting.

Stage 1 – Understanding company and the CUE1 device.

Stage 2 – Clinical knowledge development

Stage 3 – Assessing device settings, tolerability and positioning.

Stage 4 – Selecting clinical outcomes

Stage 5 – Measuring treatment effects.

Stage 6 – Design full intervention study to fully demonstrate CUE1 efficacy

The post holder will also develop a broad set of skills in project management and working on a strategic project in an innovative business, carrying out cutting-edge research. The skills developed during the project will enable the successful candidate to enhance their future career opportunities. The KTP Associate will also benefit from a Professional Development Budget of £4,000.

Main duties and responsibilities

·Leadership/ Management/ Reporting

  • Attendance, support, and chairing responsibility at project meetings.
  • Preparing regular written and verbal reports of work to both academic and industry teams.
  • Formal monthly presentations of work to the project team.
  • Preparation of quarterly progress reports and maintenance of project logs.
  • Budget management (project consumables, personal development, subsistence).
  • Show initiative and make original contributions to the research programme wherever possible, and to contribute to the team research environment in a manner conductive to the success of the research project.
  • Mastering clinical skills and preparation of SOPs to support knowledge transfer

Clinical/ Academic

  • Arrange and undertake clinical examinations in participants including submitting information sheets, protocol, and consent forms.
  • Participate in research meetings, departmental meetings, clinical meetings and meetings with potential collaborators (national and international);
  • Undertake scientific literature and database searches for the research project and related topics, and to interpret and present the findings and apply these to the research programme appropriately.
  • Maintain databases, keeping accurate written and computerised records and to ensure that these records are stored in a secure place, and to maintain confidentiality of all electronically stored personal data in line with the provisions of the Data Protection Act and GDPR.
  • Conduct statistical analyses of data with the purpose of disseminating results.
  • Prepare reports of research results for public presentation through seminars and conferences.
  • Draft or contribute to writing papers summarising research findings for publications in peer-reviewed journals (of high international standing where possible).

Teaching/ Training/ Learning

  • Attendance at mandatory training and selected personal development training.
  • Acquisition of knowledge in analytical methods that will enable analysis of data extracted from the CUE1 device and clinical / quality of life scales.
  • Delivery of clinical workshops to Charco Neurotech technical and clinical staff.
