Job description
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated medically qualified trainee interested in Neurology research to join our Parkinson’s disease/Neurodegeneration clinical research programme. This post will offer the successful candidate the opportunity to work on a project which focusses on the gut-brain axis in Parkinson’s disease. There is growing evidence that gut metabolites can influence energy homeostasis in the entire body. We want to explore whether imbalance of gut metabolites leads to mitochondrial dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease. The project is strongly patient-focussed but you will also have the opportunity to learn important skills at the bench. The lab work will entirely focus on biomarker development. The clinical aspect of this project will be strongly support by our NIHR Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre (see below), the lab work will be undertaken at the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN, see below).
The ability to implement good clinical practice is essential for this Experimental Medicine study.
You will have the opportunity to be part of the NIHR Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre (Translational Neuroscience for Chronic Neurological Disorders) Junior Academy and gain an appreciation of a wide variety of translational neuroscience research programmes.
You will integrate with a multidisciplinary team of academic neurologists and scientists with expertise in an array of cutting-edge biological and clinical research techniques at the state-of-the-art Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), University of Sheffield and the Academic Directorate of Neurosciences, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The post offers comprehensive experience of clinical academic Neurology, working alongside internationally renowned Clinicians and Neuroscientists. You will have the opportunity to learn the principles and practice of experimental medicine studies. Candidates are expected to be highly motivated, enthusiastic individuals wishing to excel in both clinical and academic training and with the ambition to be amongst the next generation of leading academic Neurologists.
The post is aimed towards pre- or post-MRCP candidates who have an interest in Neurology as a future career path with the opportunity to undertake a PhD for suitable candidates.
The post will be based in the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (http://sitran.org) at the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The post is available immediately and may be for 12 months or for up to 3 years for candidates wishing to undertake a research degree.
