Job description
An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a Lung Cancer Associate Clinical Nurse Specialist on a permanent contract, to complete the team of 6 lung CNS’s, 2 pathway nurses and 2 assistant practitioners. This role will be for the NE Sector of NCA (Fairfield, Rochdale and Oldham).
The very well established lung cancer nursing team aims to provide a high quality service which is evidence based to support lung cancer and mesothelioma patients and their families/carers. Through collaborative working with members of the multi-disciplinary team, they provide specialist nursing intervention, specialist psychological, emotional, social, practical and financial support which is responsive to the patients and families’ needs and is equitable and accessible to all.
The Lung Cancer Nursing team work very closely with all staff involved in the care of cancer patients but, in particular Respiratory Physicians, Oncologists, Ward staff and other Lung Cancer MDT members. The team liaise closely with both tertiary and primary care partners. The team are required to work with patients who present either via the 2 week wait referral system or present acutely to the service.
The objectives of the team are to:
- Provide support to patients and their families/carers from diagnosis through to palliative care by providing education, information, resources.
- Provide support to staff caring for patients with lung cancer and mesothelioma.
- Liaise with primary, secondary and tertiary centres.
1. In the absence of and with the Clinical Nurse Specialist, provide leadership, complex specialist nursing advice and be a specialist advisory resource in order to further develop the lung cancer services within and outside the Trust, including Social Services, voluntary organisation and Patient forums.
2. Assist in the development and maintenance of the lung cancer / pleural services for cancer patients requiring in-patient and out - patient treatment and care
3. Undertake research and audit
4. Provide education/training in own discipline/practical training or undertaking basic workplace assessments to the multidisciplinary Team, students, patients and carers as appropriate.
5. Assess, plan and implement and evaluate specialist nursing care

The post-holder will be a registered first level nurse with the NMC, have a relevant degree or experience. The role will require teaching of the multi-professional teams and, therefore, a qualification and/or teaching experience will be desirable. Experience in clinical audit and data collection is also desirable. You must be able to communicate effectively at all levels, have an understanding of managing your own caseload, demonstrate effective teamwork and participate in ongoing teaching and audit programmes.

The postholder will:
1. Co-ordinate and participate in the provision of a full range of lung cancer specialist services
2. Provide specialist holistic assessment and evaluation of individual patients needs referring to other multidisciplinary team members, as appropriate. Action plans to be developed.
3. Participate in the training and assessment of staff in respect of lung cancer care
4. Liaise and communicate effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary teams, attending the MDT meetings and contribute to the discussions and patient assessment / care planning decision at the weekly meetings if appropriate.
5. Ensure a high quality of written and other information is available for patients and their carers
6. Provide specialist advice and information to professional colleagues, both in primary and secondary care
7. Participate in the development of nurse led clinics as appropriate, and evaluate their effectiveness
8. Evaluate the patient pathway and develop referral and discharge criteria for specialist intervention
9. Ensure written consent for clinical procedures
10. Regularly contribute to clinical decisions regarding changes to patient care interventions
11. Be aware of appropriate Trust policies and procedures
12. In collaboration with the Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist, develop, implement and monitor quality assurance and risk management initiatives within the clinical area in line with the Trusts strategy for quality and risk management
13. Lead on patient communication issues and co-ordination of the patients pathway for patients referred to the team – acting as the key worker or responsible for nominating the key worker for the patients accessing with the team.
