Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to join our specialist multidisciplinary Chronic Pain Service. The post holder will develop and implement expert nursing input to the Chronic Pain Service. This will involve working across both parts of our service – the Pain Clinic and the Chronic Pain Self Management Team - delivering nurse led clinics and working on our intensive Pain Management Programme with people with complex pain presentations. The post holder will be well supported by experienced clinicians within in the Chronic Pain Service. In addition there will be strong links with nurse colleagues within the Inpatient Pain Team.

To provide Clinical Nurse Specialist input to the Chronic Pain Service, work across Pain Clinic and the CPSMT and to liaise effectively with the Inpatient Pain Team.

Their main site, St George’s Hospital in Tooting – one of the country’s principal teaching hospitals – is shared with St George’s, University of London, which trains medical students and carries out advanced medical research.

which is responsible for training a wide range of healthcare professionals from across the region.

St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust serves a population of 1.3 million across southwest London. A large number of services, such as cardiothoracic medicine and surgery, neurosciences and renal transplantation, also cover significant populations from Surrey and Sussex, totalling around 3.5 million people.

The trust also provides care for patients from a larger catchment area in southeast England, for specialties such as complex pelvic trauma. Other services treat patients from all over the country, such as family HIV care and bone marrow transplantation for non-cancer diseases. The trust also provides a nationwide state-of-the-art endoscopy training centre.

To provide Clinical Nurse Specialist input to the Chronic Pain Service, work across Pain Clinic and the CPSMT and to liaise effectively with the Inpatient Pain Team by -

  • Working as an autonomous, advanced practitioner and effectively delivering an expert nursing service to the Chronic Pain Service
  • Developing and providing nurse led clinics in Pain Clinic and effectively managing a caseload of patients
  • Assessing the medical status of all patients referred to the CPSMT and advising the team on patient diagnosis / conditions which may impact ability to engage in interventions offered by the team
  • Taking the lead in assessing and advising on complex pain medication regimes for all patients referred to the CPSMT
  • Ensuring that patients and their families are fully informed about chronic pain and supported by providing appropriate information, education and evidence based interventions
  • Working with a biopsychosocial framework, using CBT based models, to promote effective self management for people living with chronic pain.
  • Assisting in the development of evidence based clinical nursing practice and team interventions for chronic pain management in line with current research and guidelines
  • Maintaining clear lines of communication within the Chronic Pain Service to ensure cohesive multidisciplinary management of patients
  • Linking with other healthcare teams in order to increase knowledge and facilitate the care of this group of people in all healthcare settings
