If so, this lab scientist in Biopharm Downstream Process Development role could be an exciting opportunity to explore. GSK is currently looking for Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT) Downstream Lab Scientist in Rockville, MD to join our team. The MSAT Downstream lab is responsible for all aspects of the development of purification processes for therapeutic proteins including initial process screening, optimization and characterization, validation, scale-up and tech transfer to clinical manufacturing and/or commercial manufacturing partners.
As a Lab Scientist in Downstream Process Development, you will be a member of a highly skilled team of scientists and engineers responsible for the evaluation and optimization of purification processes. You will be involved in all aspects of the development of purification processes including initial process screening, optimization, characterization, scale-up and tech transfer to clinical manufacturing and/or commercial manufacturing partners for therapeutic proteins. Your primary focus will be on the bench-scale laboratory development of purification unit operations such as column chromatography (affinity, ion exchange, HIC, mixed mode, etc.), ultrafiltration, depth filtration, nanofiltration and continuous chromatography.
Key Responsibilities:
- Learn to independently design experiments, understand the rationale for experimental design and interpreting protein purification experiments.
- Development of purification process including initial process screening, optimization, characterization, and validation.
- Process validation, scale-up and tech transfer to clinical manufacturing and/or commercial manufacturing partners.
- Perform bench/pilot-scale laboratory experiments to develop, characterize and /or validate purification unit operations such as column chromatography, filtration, ultrafiltration etc.
- Compile, analyze and communicate experimental results.
- Describe experimental results in the form of written reports and presentations.
- Work seamlessly within a team.
- Perform laboratory duties as required.
- Other duties as assigned
The role requires office work, computer work, group meetings, laboratory work and thus requires sitting, standing, and walking. It may involve working with analytical instruments and thus may involve exposure to chemical reagents that may be hazardous (corrosive, toxic, flammable, etc.)
The role may involve occasionally working outside of 0800 –1700 hours to run experiments and manufacturing support.

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
- BA/BS in Life Sciences, biochemistry, biochemical or biomolecular engineering or equivalent technical discipline.
- Lab experience
Preferred Qualifications:
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
- Theoretical and practical understanding of protein purification and protein chemistry.
- Protein purification and process development.
- Writing, communication skills and experience using chromatography equipment such as Akta Pure. Technologies include those in the disciplines of Chemistry or other Biological Sciences
- Ability to be follow established procedures.
- Ability to be flexible, understand risk, and using analytical mindset to troubleshoot.
- Ability to continuous improvement
- Strong organizational and communication skills and attention to detail.
