St. George’s University (Grenada, West Indies) invites applicants a for full-time Clinical Instructor teaching position within the Department of Basic Sciences for the Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme located in Newcastle in the UK.

Job Description:

The St. George’s University of Grenada School of Medicine/ Northumbria University MD 4 Programme is a joint venture between St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine, Grenada and Northumbria University (NU), United Kingdom. The MD 4 programme is the first year of Basic Sciences of SGU’s MD programme from which students progress to year two of Basic Sciences in Grenada. The SGU/NU program is led by resident faculty and administrators, with the added benefit of teaching support from visiting professors and Northumbria University faculty. The programme has graduated over 1900 students since its inception in 2007. The first year of the
Basic Sciences component of the MD program at St. George’s University comprises of a complete sequence of systems modules that integrate Human Anatomy, Histology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Genetics and Neuroscience and Behavioral Sciences.

Applications are sought from Medical graduates who want to enter the academic side of medicine or who are waiting to take licensing exams, as it provides both useful materials and time for study.

Objective:
The Clinical Instructor’s main duties involve providing clinical correlation to the Basic Sciences. In this context, Clinical Instructors will be responsible for facilitating student group academic activities, on clinical skills, developing clinical vignettes and modelling and assessing professional behaviors linked to the objectives of the basic science courses. In addition, Clinical Instructors will contribute to the Interactive Team Instruction delivery method, which is a more intensive small group delivery method that augments the delivery of Basic Sciences and clinical content to our students in facilitated small group activities.

Essential Functions:

  • Facilitation of small group and practical sessions for medical students
  • Contribution to written and practical student assessments
  • Development of Step-style assessment items
  • Participation in content and teaching training sessions through attendance at live sessions and participation in self-directed study of provided materials.
  • Service to the University
  • Any other related duties assigned by the Chair
  • Availability during Small Group sessions, training sessions, or in the Clinical Instructor offices of the department during working hours

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a basic Medical Degree (MD, MBSS or equivalent).
  • Preference will be given to recent Doctors of Medicine that have qualified within the past five years) from World Health Organization (WHO) listed medical schools, who have completed a minimum of one year internship at a teaching hospital, and who have a UK visa permitting them to work in the UK for at least one year.
  • Candidates should have demonstrated high academic performance at medical school and be registered to practice medicine with their respective medical council.
  • All candidates should have strong communication skills in English.
  • All candidates should have the intention to complete board exams such as USMLE

STEP/PLAB, MRCS, MRCP or equivalent and be working towards procurement of a residency position.

Hours:

Expected to put in 40 working hours a week and be available during the core operation time of the department (Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm), with flexibility to be available according to the student timetable.

Salary:

Successful applicants will be offered a competitive salary and will automatically be enrolled on to the National Employment Savings Trust pension scheme in line with the government workplace pension reform under the pensions Act 2008.
