Oncology services are predominantly based on the Charing Cross site, where we have 2 inpatient wards, a new 50 chair day care facility for SACT administration and ambulatory acute oncology services. Radiotherapy is delivered predominantly at Charing Cross currently, although we are in the process of installing a further machine on the Hammersmith site. We have full stereotactic capability and deliver brachytherapy at Hammersmith Hospital. The Trust offers specialist care for almost all cancers (except paediatrics and sarcoma) and is a national lead for management of gestational trophoblastic tumours (one of 2 sites in England). We provide a regional service for malignant spinal cord compression co-located with neurosurgical services. We also are a regional service for stereotactic radiotherapy, external beam radiotherapy services including brachytherapy with state of the art modern technology and equipment predominantly, on the Charing Cross site. The Charing Cross Site predominantly has outpatient Breast, Lung, Uro-oncology, Neuro-oncology, Colorectal, skin (including melanoma) and Head & Neck cancer services. The Hammersmith Site predominantly have outpatient CUP, hepatobiliary, colorectal, neuroendocrine, liver and gynae-oncology services. Gestational trophoblastic services is based at Charing Cross.
The majority of the clinical role will be dedicated supporting the brain tumour stereotactic radiotherapy service. The successful candidate would also gain experience of outpatient clinics, systemic anticancer treatments, radiotherapy planning and acute oncology inpatient services as part of a ward and on-call rota. They would be able to contribute to the on-call rota within the oncology team, but this is not essential. The rest of the time will be spent studying for an MD/PhD at Imperial College. The role can be performed fulltime or part-time.
We are a large department of 12 clinical oncologists & 11.5 medical oncologists (5.5 NHS, 6 academic), with major opportunity for academic development and research, working closely with Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre. Prof Iain McNeish is Oncology Lead for Imperial College.
This is an exciting opportunity for a clinical fellow to work within the department of Oncology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHNT). Initially it is a 12 month fixed term contract, which may be extended to a maximum of 36 months. This post will form part of the clinical oncology post graduate training rotation and provide great learning opportunities in a supportive environment. The role would ideally suit overseas trainees wishing to pursue further training in Clinical Oncology, post completion of local fellowship. ICHNT would provide sponsorship for GMC registration.

Key areas of responsibilities Provide high quality care to patients in Oncology services
The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration.
- To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
- To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care programmed activities.
- To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
- Research, teaching and training
- • Where possible to collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trust’s translational research portfolio, at all times meeting the full requirements of research governance.
- To provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by clinical director.
- To act as educational supervisor and appraiser as delegated by the divisional director/clinical director to ensure external accreditation of training post.
- Performance management• To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas: • Clinical efficiency e.g. LOS reductions, reducing cancelled operations and DNA rates.
- Clinical efficiency eg timely chemotherapy prescribing (7 days ahead of delivery excepting emergencies) and review with clear documentation and communication within the multi-professional team.
- Electronic record and note keep in line with GMC guidance– The Trust has CERNER as it’s electronic notes system.
- Quality of outcomes e.g. infection control targets, reducing re-admission rates, accurate toxicity recording and management of toxicities of treatment. Active engagement in clinical governance structures, including Datix reporting of errors or non-conformance.
- Financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively
- Need to fully comply with Trust Statutory Mandatory Training
- Medical staff management• To work with colleagues to ensure junior doctors’ hours are compliant in line with EWTD and New Deal
- Governance• To review clinical outcomes in designated area using external benchmarking data where appropriate, to identify and advise variances to the divisional director or clinical director.
- To participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.
- To work closely with the directorate, patient and public involvement panels in relation to clinical and services developments as delegated by the divisional director/clinical director
- To participate in ensuring NICE requirements are reviewed, implemented, and monitored in the speciality areas.
- To ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis.
- To keep fully informed about best practice in the speciality areas and ensure implications for practice changes are discussed with the divisional director/clinical director
- To role model good practice for infection control to all members of the multidisciplinary team
- Strategy and business planning• To participate in the business planning and objective setting process for the directorate and Trust where appropriate.
- To represent the Trust at appropriate clinical networks/other external clinical meetings, as delegated by the divisional director/clinical director.
- Leadership and team working• To demonstrate excellent leadership skills with regard to individual performance, clinical teams, the Trust and when participating in national initiatives.
- To work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and Imperial College London as required.
- To chair regular meetings for the specialties.
- To resolve conflict and difficult situations through negotiation and discussion, involving appropriate parties.
- To adhere to Trust/departmental guidelines on leave including reporting absence.
The post holder will be expected and supported to develop research initiatives, appropriate to previous experience and complementary to those programmes that exist within the wider research framework of the directorate and Trust.

In addition, there are opportunities for research funding from the Medical Research Council, BBSRC, the Wellcome Trust and other medical charities.
An honorary academic appointment with Imperial College Faculty of Medicine will be offered if research and/or teaching is undertaken.

Teaching opportunities
There are extensive teaching opportunities within the Division and in Oncology, both on the ward, with junior doctors, SpR training and medical students but also post graduate events. The post holder will be allocated an Educational Supervisor.
Administrative duties
Clinical administration is supported by the administration team and is expected to meet GMC requirements.
The post holder will be expected to work with the administration team to ensure clinical information is sent out in a timely manner (< 7days from clinic review)
We have an electronic record system – CERNER – and it is expected that full documentation be undertaken in this system, as per medical records historically. Chemotherapy e-prescribing system is ARIA.
Job plan
A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee, Dr Power/Dr Asif or Dr Basak, Clinical Supervisor and Program Lead.
The post holder and Divisional Director/ Clinical Director/HoS will review the Job Plan annually in line with Terms and Conditions. Either may propose amendment of the job plan.
