An opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Associate Psychologist Apprentice to join the UCLH Staff Psychology & Welfare Service (SPWS).

The Clinical Associate Psychologist (CAP) role is an exciting new psychology profession that has now been approved as a Level 7 Degree Apprenticeship. This is an 18 month programme and will form the underpinning training phase for this post and is delivered by the University of Exeter. You will be working within a multidisciplinary psychology team at UCLH to develop the clinical skills and competencies essential to the role. The combination of clinical skills development with the academic knowledge and evidence base that underpins them will enable you to deliver psychologically-informed care and interventions within a physical healthcare setting, under supervision of an experienced and HCPC registered Practitioner Psychologist.

The successful candidate will undertake a structured programme of learning including personal study, academic work, placement learning and assessment leading to the award of the end point assessment and the MSc in Clinical Associate Psychology Apprenticeship.

The job title of the successful candidate will change to Psychology Well Being Practitioner, upon successful completion of training.

To support and enhance psychological care of UCLH staff within all areas of our acute hospital setting based on a whole population approach and working as part of a multidisciplinary team providing timely and flexible support to staff and teams to support their wellbeing both at work and in their personal lives.

To work alongside the multidisciplinary team and members of the UCLH staff welfare community to enhance understanding of mental health and emotional wellbeing, to reduce stigma and the impact of incivility and violence, enable connectedness and instill a sense of belonging to a just and learning culture.

Psychology at UCLH

Staffed by Clinical, Counselling, Health and Neuro psychologists, specialist Psychology services are available in some departments at UCH, Queens Square and RNTNE for patients. Appointment and professional practice of psychologists are overseen by the designated site-based professional leads. The Staff Psychology & Welfare Service resides in the Workforce division of the organisation and works alongside the Occupational Health Service to provide support for all staff within the Trust.

The post-holder has the responsibility to work within the Cultural Pillars, policies and procedures of University College London NHS Foundation Trust and relevant national guidance and evidence base.

  • To provide a wide and appropriate range of psychological assessments
  • To use psychological formulations to understand in a collaborative manner, symptoms and behaviours in relation to service user experience and wider social and organisational context
  • To work with service users to identify, in line with their life goals, the most appropriate options/interventions available to them
  • To develop, where indicated, plans for formal psychological interventions and/or enhancing self-management
  • To provide and receive complex, sensitive and emotional information in relation to health issues
  • To be mindful of the needs and assets of individuals from a wide range of racial, cultural, sexual, religious and social backgrounds
  • To co-produce innovative ways of communicating and working across language and cultural differences with service users and colleagues
  • To provide consultation regarding the psychological care of the service user group to managers across the organisation
Operational duties
  • To input, record, monitor and report on clinical work in the Trust through electronic health record systems
  • To provide accurate and timely clinical information as required
  • To maintain knowledge of and use information technology in line with Trust and NHS information governance requirements
