About the job

Job summary

The Institute of Naval Medicine (INM) is the Royal Navy's Centre of Excellence, bringing together scientists and medical professionals to improve the health of the UK Armed Forces. The unique opportunities offered within are varied, challenging and exciting and support Navy Command's role to generate and operate forces for today and to ensure we are ready for tomorrow by developing and delivering the Navy of the future. Navy Command provides an open, flexible and supportive work environment where Civil Servants and Armed Forces personnel work together in a wealth of interesting and challenging jobs in different disciplines.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a small, multidisciplinary team of clinical and health professionals including clinicians, physiologists, ergonomists and psychologists. The INM supports MOD personnel operating across a wide range of occupational and environmental conditions at sea, in the air, and on land both in the UK and overseas. We are seeking a registered General Practitioner with an interest in Occupational Medicine to support our clinical out-patient assessments, assist improvement in our services and to undertake collaborative research.

This position is advertised at 40 hours per week.

Evidence of Immunity to Hepatitis B is required.

Job description

The work portfolio is broad and includes clinical assessments, occupational medicine advice, research activities, clinical governance and teaching. The main tasks include:

occupational healthcare and specialist employability assessments for all patients referred to the Department;
clinical support and Subject matter Expert (SME) for the Tri-Service non-freezing cold injury clinic and the RN fitness and anthropometry clinic, providing medical assessments and reports for these clinics.
appropriate preventative medical advice to individuals and the chain of Command;
development of a health surveillance programme for RN and MoD employees at risk of non-freezing cold injury, principally the RN diving population.

The successful applicant will have contact with patients and service users. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been necessary to take significant steps to protect the health and safety of our staff, patients and service users. MOD policy remains aligned with the government position that vaccines are the best way to protect yourself and others from the risk of getting seriously ill/dying from COVID-19 and reducing the risk of spreading COVID-19 to others. We therefore encourage all our employees and prospective ones to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 subject to any exemptions that may apply. Detail concerning the options available for vaccination against COVID-19, along with information on risks and side effects is available from: Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines - NHS (www.nhs.uk) to enable individuals to make an informed decision.

If you need to contact Defence Business Services (DBS) regarding this vacancy, please indicate that your vacancy is being handled by Resourcing Team 1.
