Job description
Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) began life in 1991 within the Museum of London and as part of the Corporation of London. In 2011, it became an independent limited company and a registered charity.
MOLA is the UK’s largest commercial archaeology company and an established, innovative heritage practice and educational charity with an annual turnover of around £24 million and poised for exciting further growth. With around 450 staff based in London, Northampton, Stansted, Chester, Bristol and Basingstoke, MOLA provides commercial archaeological expertise and services in support of housing, development, infrastructure and other construction schemes, bringing to light the irreplaceable information that lies in archaeological sites and historic buildings, landscapes, and artefacts. The knowledge gained through that work is made accessible through ground-breaking research and community engagement projects with a focus on working in ways which benefit both the development project and its community, creating new knowledge, skills and understandings through archaeological discovery, research, participation, and outreach.
The Board of Trustees is now seeking an exceptional candidate to lead MOLA as its Chief Executive. The post-holder will provide visible and inspiring strategic and operational leadership and direction to the organisation. They will be responsible for MOLA’s performance, for ensuring its finances are well managed, for supporting MOLA’s role in the dissemination of archaeological knowledge and for championing MOLA with key stakeholders, clients and partners. Candidates will need to bring the commercial experience and expertise to lead and manage a significant and ambitious commercial and grant-funded ventures, including shaping our future as an Independent Research Organisation. They will need excellent communication and people management skills, a level of financial understanding and the drive and ambition to move MOLA forward. The candidate must have a strong understanding of and empathy with the archaeology/heritage sector.
