Mercy in Action is a UK registered charity (1096068) working with children, their families and communities in the UK and the Philippines.
In the UK, our Petra Project provides nurturing homes for young mums and their babies and young people, who would otherwise be facing homelessness. In the Philippines, our work centres around helping children to regain lost years by providing residential care, a schooling program and a drop-in centre for street children. Our professional staff work tirelessly to reunite families and enable them to have a future together.
Our newest Bath-based projects, the Clothesline and Action Pantry, provide food and clothing to local families.
Our growing network of Mercy in Action Charity shops raises essential funds for maintaining and expanding these projects, enabling us to support those most in need

The Role
Our Charity Retail Assistant Managers are responsible for volunteers and assist the managers with the day to day running of our shops. Our assistant managers are self-motivated, customer-focused, and able to follow tasks as well as use their initiative. Our shop days are fast-paced and varied so you will never find yourself with nothing to do.
The position is 32 hours per week across 4 days you will be required to work alternate Saturdays.

You will be experienced in working with people and confident in supporting a team in a busy environment. You will have a strong drive to achieve great results and be motivated by the knowledge you are making a real difference to the success of Mercy in Action. You will be creative, proactive and brimming with ideas to help make the most of the shop, with great customer service and the tools to help make the shop a place that people want to keep coming back to.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
SALES
- Ensure sales targets are achieved and costs are controlled
- Maximise department sales and Gift Aid within the shop
STOCK MANAGEMENT
- Assist the Manager in the control of pricing in line with company policy
- Assist in managing the sale of new goods in line with company guidelines
- Assist in managing stock room systems to ensure quality control, stock density and rotation
- Apply company display, merchandising and window dressing standards
LINE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
- Recruit sufficient number of volunteers to ensure adequate shop support at all times
- Assist the Manager in organising sick and holiday cover
- Assist in the training of staff & volunteers
- Develop the shop team through effective leadership, communication & supervision
OPERATIONS
- Take responsibility for managing the shop when the Manager is absent.
- Assist the manager in promoting excellent H&S culture throughout the shop team in accordance with MiA’s Health and Safety Policy & Procedures at all times.
- Security - act as key holder; ensure security of cash, stock, staff & premises, adhering to company cash handling procedure
HEALTH & SAFETY
The post holder will ensure they are fully acquainted with Mercy in Action’s over-arching Health & Safety policy (available form Head office) as well as any additional extant local (shop/ office/ warehouse) policies. As with all staff, the post holder has a clear obligation to report any H&S worries or concerns to their Line Manager.
The post holder will be expected to undertake moderate bending, stretching and lifting in the course of their duties.
TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT
Mercy in Action is committed to ensuring all staff receive the training they need to undertake their job in a safe and compliant manner. The post holder’s training and development needs will be identified and agreed in accordance with the Employment & Training Manual and will be reviewed on a six-monthly basis.
CONDUCT & BEHAVIOUR
The post holder must ensure they are fully conversant with Mercy in Action’s Employee Handbook and they act in full compliance with it at all times.
