Responsibilities and Duties
Our award winning Toronto animation studio is looking for a junior to mid level 2D Character Designer for a very cool and unique 2D/3D animation project. Content is true crime inspired, graphic and violent in nature. The design style of the show is based on existing individuals and there is a strong sense of realism to the show design. Animators will interact directly with the animation director, leads, and producers.
Key Responsibilities
- Design 2D characters as required for use by various departments within the 2D/3D animation pipeline. (Pipeline is Harmony 21, but characters can be designed in PSD.)
- Collaborate with the director and project team to understand the creative vision, style requirements, and design goals for characters in the project.
- Conceptualize and develop 2D character designs based on real life reference material that effectively convey personality, emotions, and visual appeal while aligning with the project's artistic direction.
- Maintain organized file structures and adhere to production workflows, ensuring the smooth integration of animations into the pipeline and collaborating with other departments when necessary.
- Ensure that all designs are production friendly and can be used within scenes.
- Adhere to the production guidelines regarding file types and sizes.
Key Requirements
- 3+ years of previous experience as a 2D Character Designer or a similar role, with a strong portfolio showcasing exceptional skills in character design and illustration. Proven experience on an animation production.
- Proficiency in drawing software including Photoshop and considerable knowledge of Harmony is preferred.
- We are seeking an individual who possesses strong portrait skills.
- Experience with life drawing skills and human interpretation.
- Strong capability to effectively receive and execute direction in a professional manner.
- Knowledge of colour theory, shading, and lighting techniques to enhance the visual impact and depth of the characters.
- Strong character design and construction/mechanical skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours if and when necessary with tight deadlines.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality work within designated timeframes. Strong time-management skills.
- A great attitude and work ethic. Able to work & communicate efficiently in a motivated milestone-driven, team environment.
- Project is graphic and violent. Strong stomachs needed, and those not easily offended.
