Post: 1 WTE Band 6 Chaplain Full time post.
The ecumenical, multi-faith team of Chaplains which covers both campuses of this Hospital Trust, currently has a vacancy for a Band 6 Chaplain.
This is a Band 6 role and applicants will need to demonstrate healthcare chaplaincy experience, with an aptitude for sensitive pastoral working in this context.
Applicants will have accreditation/ licensing with authority to practice as a religion or belief (including non-religious beliefs) leader/ representative and/or pastoral worker.
The role involves weekend working and daytime and overnight on-call.
As a member of the Department of Spiritual and Pastoral Care team you will assist in the delivery of appropriate and sensitive spiritual, pastoral and religious care. This provision is for patients, staff and visitors across the Trust. The provision is offered equally for those of any particular faith/belief and those who do not identify with any.
The role requires a person-centred approach that employs active listening skills. This band 6 role requires experienced and proficient pastoral practitioners. It requires the ability, where required, to facilitate religious rites and sacraments. Chaplains practice in accordance with the Guidelines and Code of conduct of the UK Board of Healthcare Chaplaincy.
Main duties of the job
Chaplains share in the provision of 24-hour on-call cover; assessing and providing pastoral, spiritual, and religious care needs. Scheduled interactions, crisis situations; and responding to emergency calls are part of the role. It also includes delivering training, supervising students, developing the chaplaincy service within the Trust and working collaboratively with other healthcare professionals. Frequent involvement in end of life care is to be expected, including peri-natal loss and conducting baby funerals.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Contribute to the effective working of the Spiritual and Pastoral Care team:
- Ensure good communication and collaboration with all members of the Spiritual and Pastoral Care Department.
- Follow established procedures and policies.
- Opportunity to share in the provision of 24-hour on-call cover; making decisions using own initiative about spiritual needs in crisis situations; responding to emergency calls in week and weekend night-times while meeting the required response time. This dimension includes responsibility for putting the opening phases of the NUH Major Incident Plan into action for Spiritual and Pastoral Care when required.
- Share in the daytime duty rota.
- Receive and respond to referrals from members of the healthcare team.
- Assist in the planning of the work of Spiritual and Pastoral Care students.
- Participate in particular projects and operational groups as directed by the Spiritual and Pastoral Care Manager.
- Prepare and disseminate briefing material, reports and liturgical material as directed by the Spiritual and Pastoral Care Manager.
- Assist with Spiritual and Pastoral Care service developments, including Major Incident planning and implementation.
- Contribute to audit and research within Chaplaincy practice
- Provide pastoral and spiritual care:
- Assess spiritual health and wellbeing needs, develop spiritual care plans, and keep written and electronic records.
- Manage referrals and determine a timely response.
- Maintain confidentiality and obtain informed consent.
- Provide or facilitate spiritual and pastoral care sensitive to the cultural, faith and belief realities of the diversity of service users, including identifying language needs and accessing interpreting services.
- Protect individuals from all unwanted visits, including visits from faith community or belief group representatives, and communicate this to third parties as appropriate.
- Maintain effective and consistent links with designated clinical areas.
- Work collaboratively alongside other professionals of all grades.
- Articulate need on behalf of an individual when required.
- Provide or facilitate religious care:
- Deliver ritual consistent with one’s own faith or belief tradition.
- Devise, co-ordinate and lead ritual to meet particular needs e.g. memorial services for staff.
- Perform ritual interventions connected with crisis according to the needs of users and consistent with the permissions and practice of one’s own faith or belief community, e.g. the baptism of seriously ill babies the washing of deceased patients sacrament of the sick
- Conduct funerals.
- Organise rites and sacraments that cannot be undertaken by the post holder to be administered by a suitable colleague or community faith/belief leader.
- Make referrals to appropriate faith/belief leaders and community ministers of religion at the patient’s request and with their consent.
- Establish effective links with faith/belief leaders in the community.
- Record all assessments and interventions in patient information system

- Facilitate, as agreed with the Spiritual and Pastoral Care Manager, the administrative, development, and reflective practice processes of the Department.

Person specification
Training and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Accreditation/ licensing with authority to practice as a religion or belief (including non-religious beliefs) leader/ representative and/or pastoral worker.
- Accredited training/qualification (normally degree level or higher) in theology, pastoral care or other relevant discipline
Desirable criteria
- Further counselling skills supported by appropriate training.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial, recent pastoral experience in local faith/belief community setting or equivalent
- Significant experience of healthcare chaplaincy OR of providing spiritual and pastoral care in a non-religious setting.
- Sufficient experience and understanding of spiritual, religious and pastoral care in the healthcare chaplaincy setting to advise colleagues on spiritual and religious care, and ethical and care issues
- Awareness of professional and legal requirements relating to safe and effective practice working with service users and colleagues eg. Safeguarding
- Able to support and facilitate sacraments/rites and spiritual needs according to service user’s own faith/belief group.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of collaborative working in a multi-faith/belief setting.
- Understanding of current issues in NHS.
Communication and Relationship skills
Essential criteria
- Good communication skills to provide pastoral care to individuals in a variety of complex pastoral encounters eg. traumatic events, breaking bad news.
- Able to share and record information within the healthcare team.
- Experience of working within data protection and information governance policies
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting, with agreed protocols and procedures
- Experience of providing education, training and supervision in a workplace setting.
Analytical and Judgement Skills
Essential criteria
- Able to contribute to ethical discussion and support ethical reflection

- Effective in crisis work. eg. responding appropriately to patients and relatives following traumatic injury or death, or in the event of a major incident.

- Proficient in performance of administrative processes.eg. keeping accurate records. Computer literate and familiar with Microsoft Office (ie. Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Publisher) .
- Good time management: Ability to prioritise conflicting tasks and demands, Ability to evidence autonomous working, Ability to manage a pastoral case-load
Phsyical skills
Essential criteria
- Car driver with current licence or ability to reach hospital sites within agreed response time frame when on-call, and travel between sites during working hours as service needs demand
Requirements specific to the role
Essential criteria
- Able to participate in the departmental on-call provision, including overnight on-call. Must be able to attend any of hospital sites in response to urgent call-outs within 1 hour
- Committed to working collaboratively in ecumenical and multi-faith/belief team and setting
- Work to maintain Chaplaincy Standards (NHS Chaplaincy Guidelines 2015: Promoting Excellence in Pastoral, Spiritual & Religious Care) and compliant with UK Board of Healthcare Chaplaincy Code of Conduct for Healthcare Chaplains 2014.

I also consent to the Occupational Health Department confidentially accessing my occupational health records from my current or previous employer in order to check the status of my vaccinations, immunisations s and screening tests as relevant to the post. - Disclosure and Barring Service: Your post maybe subject to a DBS check which incur a cost dependent on the level of check required (£41.90 for enhanced and £21.90 for standard). I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check if it is required (by deduction from first month’s pay).
