Job description
The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital under the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking caring, dynamic and attentive applicants to provide an exceptional patient care experience that promotes healing and recovery in a compassionate public health hospital environment.
The Nursing Assistant plays a vital role by being patient-centered and building trust with our patient population. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), the selected candidate will assist patients with illnesses and conditions that are often underserved or difficult to manage in other health care settings, by assisting the patient with activities of daily living.
Please Note: This position is a full time 40/hr per week, multiple shifts available
Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):
- Provides exceptional nursing care under the direction and supervision of an RN or LPN by observing and monitoring changes in patients' condition(s).
- Records vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, or respiration rate, as part of nursing care plan and enters data into Meditech.
- Communicates with patients to ascertain feelings or need for assistance or social and emotional support.
- Maintains a safe and hygienic environment as part of the patient care plan and according to Infection Control policies/procedures.
- Provides physical support to assist patients to perform daily living activities, including but not limited to, getting out of bed, bathing, dressing, toileting, standing, or walking.
- Gathers and documents information from caregivers, nurses, or physicians about patient condition, treatment plans, or appropriate activities in accordance with Nursing department policies/procedures.
- Assists nurses or physicians in the operation of medical equipment or provision of patient care.
- Contributes to effective interpersonal and community relations by promoting a therapeutic milieu as a patient advocate/resource to staff, patients, families, visitors and other departments/agencies.
- Assumes continuity of care among all caregivers by following both the hospital-wide and Department of Nursing hand off communication policies.
- Responds and assists in emergency codes to ensure the safe care and management of patients.
Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to understand written/oral instructions and work as a team member.
- Skilled in empathizing with patients and communicating effectively.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification as a Nurse Aide under the Massachusetts Nurse Aide Registry.
- Ability to display sensitivity and respect regarding a patients' cultural and religious preferences/needs.
- Demonstrated competency appropriate to the age of patients served.
- Capacity to establish effective relationships with individuals, families, visitors and medical staff.
- Skilled in demonstrating situational awareness, compassion and attention to detail with readiness to respond appropriately when needed.
About the Shattuck Hospital:
Shattuck provides a safety net for patients referred by teaching and community hospitals that require extended care and is an essential health care provider for patients facing challenges accessing high quality healthcare. The hospital is on the front lines of the opiate epidemic, leading in the innovative treatment of substance use disorders.
Shattuck provides a full range of services including acute care supported by a Medical Intermediate Care Unit, surgical services, telemetry, anesthesiology, pulmonary services, orthopedics, rehabilitative medicine, PICC/central line placement, advanced wound care, chemo-therapy, and telemedicine. Comprehensive ancillaries and procedures include full clinical lab/pathology, CT and MRI, on-site pharmacy, sleep studies, EKG/ECHO and EEG. In addition to the main hospital, 25 outpatient clinics coordinate “one-stop” medical and mental health care and offer the only ambulatory surgical service among the state hospitals. The clinical environment is strictly governed by regulatory standards that mandate day to day interventions and services
