This Volunteer role will support Sussex Police under the control and direction of a CID supervisor in the viewing of CCTV.

The Role

The volunteers will play a key role in assisting the investigations team with acquisitive crime and missing persons enquiries.

The role is based at John Street Police Station in Brighton and the duration of the task will depend on the caseload from the investigation teams. It is estimated that the volunteer will be required 3-4 times a month for approximately 4 hours a session.

Key Responsibilities

To support CCTV review requests from police officers and staff to review captured footage. There will also be some basic administration tasks required.


  • The volunteer will be allocated CCTV to view which involves offences such as Assaults, theft, burglaries, criminal damage to property and missing person enquiries.
  • Within SIUs the volunteers will be allocated CCTV to view which involves supporting the investigation of serious sexual offences, child abuse and high-risk domestic violence matters (These will be supporting suspect identification and alibi evidence and will not involve dealing with the offence directly)
  • Clear instruction will be given, so that the volunteer is fully aware of what they are viewing and what information the investigation team require.
  • The volunteer will be required to undertake some administration, such recording what they have viewed capturing times, locations and a short description of the image etc. This will then be emailed to the Line Manager.

Skills & Experience

Desired criteria: You will:
  • Be confident using technology
  • Have good observational skills
  • Have a good understanding of Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Be a team player but able to work on your own initiative
  • Need to fully understand the need for confidentiality and accuracy
