Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Seeks opportunities to welcome, engage, serve and thank customers. Maintains an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service with an emphasis of taking care of the customer.
- Operates check stand equipment such as a cash register, scanner and scale to process customer orders using two aisles to check customers.
- Engages in suggestive selling and other sales techniques.
- Processes monetary transactions (i.e., giving and receiving change, etc.) including cash, checks, gift certificates, travelers checks, food stamps, processing coupons, and refunds. As well as understands and adheres to all Cash Handling and Lane Accountability policies and procedures.
- Maintains knowledge of current product location, monitors UPC codes and ensures proper pricing.
- Maintains clean, neat and properly stocked check stand and ensures safe and secure work area.
- Stocks, prices and rotates merchandise.
- May be assigned to a multi station self-checkout lane as needed.
- May be assigned to the customer service counter as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned or needed.
- Follows all state and federal laws concerning the sale of any restricted or regulated items (i.e. tobacco, alcohol)
- Adheres to all United States Department of Agriculture Food Stamp or WIC voucher procedures.
Additional Self-Checkout Attendant Duties and Responsibilities
- Regularly moves within SCO area to expedite transactions, maintain attentive presence and keep area clear of safety hazards.
- Initiates and engages contact with customers as they process their transactions.
- Responds to SCO stations to accurately review, address and clear alerts and/or errors with customer transactions.
- Monitors multiple simultaneous transactions and verifies payment in fast paced setting.
- Actively and routinely engages with customers at self-checkout kiosks to assist in transactions, ensure accuracy, and limit shrinkage.
- Maintains a high level of awareness of the self-checkout area and customers; anticipates customer needs, monitors transaction activity, makes regular eye contact with customers, observes bottom of the basket, etc.
- Prioritizes safety of employees and customers by addressing or reporting concerns as provided by Company policy.
Requirements
- Work varied shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Perform friendly, courteous, tactful relations with customers and co-workers with composure.
- Communicate (hearing and speech) to perform customer relation tasks
- Complete written forms.
- Conduct visual inspection, read information on merchandise, etc.
- Lift and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to 20 lbs. frequently and perform repetitious work accurately.
- Lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
- Operate check stand equipment such as cash registers, scanners, and scales.
- Stand or sit for long periods of time, walk rapidly, bend, stoop, twist, and turn frequently for long periods of time.
- Must be 16 years of age or older.
- Manual dexterity and good hand/eye coordination.
- Learn and memorize a considerable amount of information including PLU codes, location of products, check stand and keyboard procedures and company policies.
- Ensure accuracy in scanning and verifying sales and handling monetary transactions with mental alertness and basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply and divide).
- Occasionally use blades for box cutting.
- Use household cleaners to maintain work area (i.e., approved all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, etc.).
- Perform primary duties efficiently and accurately.
- Navigate and manage potentially high stress situations, volatile or unsatisfied customers, and a high volume of transactions and customers.
- As required by applicable state and local laws, food safety/handlers cards, tobacco and alcohol sales certification (e.g., TAM card).
For minors hired, hours may differ as well as machines and equipment operated.
