Eligible for one day telework following probationary period and approval of supervisor.
The Career Coach will provide career coaching to NOVA students, in particular students seeking to join workforce and continuing education programs, and work with the career counseling team to identify and utilize career assessments and other resources to assist students with career decision-making and preparation for employment. The Career Coach reports to the Associate Director of Career Planning and Development. This is an entry to mid-level position.
Duties and Tasks:
- Engage in direct interactions and relationship building for career related coaching and advising in support of students.
- Keep accurate, up to date notes within Navigate to ensure continuity of care.
- Support the design and facilitation of workshops for faculty members, staff, students, and prospective students on a variety of career and employment topics, including personal interest and career exploration, resume workshops, interview preparation, and assist with recruiting events for NOVA students.
- Support the career planning and development team with the development and maintenance of the division’s website and resources.
- Work with internal and external stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and businesses to update and share career information and opportunities related to assigned disciplines.
- Participate in College task forces, pathway councils, leadership committees, and working groups.
- Participates in regular professional development as required and/or relevant to the assigned work.
- This position is restricted and is funded with non-continuous or non-recurring funding and is subject to continuation based on fiscal year funds and the needs of the College.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Knowledge of coaching theory including career development and job search strategies.
- Ability to discern appropriate instances of confidentiality and effectively communicate this with students.
- Ability to promote inclusive coaching sessions and a campus climate respectful of diversity and multiculturalism.
- Ability to utilize interpersonal and problem-solving skills with students, faculty, staff, parents, members of the community and College representatives.
- Ability to work with College faculty and staff in support of career development outcomes as related to select academic pathways at NOVA
- Effective written, interpersonal and presentations skills, with small and large groups.
- Ability to design and implement programs including career workshops and major events.
- Ability to use and analyze data to evaluate and improve programs.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently as well as part of a team.
- Ability to conduct responsibilities while demonstrating excellent customer service skills.
- Knowledge of, and skill in, computer usage including Microsoft Office, e-mail, student information systems, Adobe Acrobat Reader, social media, and use of the Internet to complete research.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner.
- Knowledge of relevant federal, state, VCCS, and college policies and regulations. including the Family Education Rights Privacy Act (FERPA), Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Title IX, and VAWA/SaVE, and Clery legislation.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education, training, and experience.
- Some experience providing career coaching to college students or prospective college students.
- Some teaching or workshop facilitation experience.
- Master’s degree in higher education, counseling; student affairs, or a related field or equivalent combination of education,training and experience.
- Some experience providing coaching or advising to college students or prospective college students.
- Some experience with event planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Some experience utilizing Navigate, PeopleSoft, Canvas or other higher education systems, or with online career technologies, including Symplicity.
- Bilingual with proficiency in a foreign language frequently spoken in Northern Virginia households.
