- About the home
Serene Residential Care Home is privately owned and managed by a team of partners. It has 35 beds and provides residential care for older people. The registered manager oversees the day to day running of the home and has overall responsibility for the safety of the residents. The home takes referrals from people who self-fund their own care, as well as people funded by the local authority. It is set on the outskirts of Dewsbury town centre and has accessible outside space and gardens for staff and residents to enjoy. The team consists of the registered manager, seniors, care staff, catering and housekeeping and a full-time handyperson. It has a car park and is close to major transport routes including bus and train services.
- Purpose of this job
We want the residents at this home to have happy and fulfilled lives, in the best physical and mental health possible. We only recruit care workers who can demonstrate that they can support residents with dignity, respect, compassion and patience.
- Main duties
- To support residents with personal care including bathing, oral care and going to the toilet, eating and drinking, social and spiritual fulfilment and emotional wellbeing.
- To participate in supervision and appraisals ensuring that you have prepared for these.
- To report any changes in a resident’s health or wellbeing to the senior person on duty
- To report any suspicions of abuse to the senior person on duty immediately
- To attend and participate in staff meetings
- To attend all mandatory training and completion of E-Learning training when required and within the designated timescales
- Contribute to information used in care plans, reviews and risk assessments with residents and their families/significant others
- To communicate effectively with other staff, relatives and visitors including professional agencies regarding residents where required
- To answer the door and telephone appropriately. Respond accordingly and pass on messages promptly. Make visitors feel welcome and provide refreshments/assistance when required
- Main responsibilities
- To be familiar with resident’s care plans, reviews and risk assessments so you know how to support people safely
- To be aware of the key policies under which the service operates
- To act as key worker for at least one named resident
- To be responsible for the health and safety of yourself, residents and your colleagues. This includes being aware of the fire evacuation process and your role in it.
- Understand the importance of promoting dignity, inclusion, choice, and fulfilment.
- To always wear the uniform provided with plain black trousers and flat sensible shoes
- Ensure that you do not use a mobile telephone while on duty
- To ensure that all information of a confidential nature gained in the course of your work, is not divulged to third parties, including other residents
- Be clear about your safeguarding duty to report any concerns relating to poor practice or harm to a resident. Be aware of the home’s whistleblowing policy to raise matters of concern externally if you do not receive a satisfactory response.

You must be able to demonstrate at interview that you have the following skill and abilities, or the willingness to learn:
- Ability to communicate effectively with your colleagues; residents; families and other professionals in course of your work
- Ability to use distraction techniques to diffuse a situation
- Ability to find safe solutions to problems
- Friendly, warm and patient nature but still mindful of professional boundaries
- Knowledge & experience
You must be able to demonstrate at interview that you have the following knowledge and experience, or the willingness to learn:
- Understanding of dementia and how this impacts on a person’s life
- Understanding of person-centred care and experience of using this in a previous role
- Previous experience in a care setting
- Experience of safe moving & handling techniques
- Awareness of health & safety and how it applies to this role
Person specification
Essential – you must have this to be offered an interview for this post. You will be asked to demonstrate these qualities on your application form and at interview
