Job summary:
To assist in the provision of care, working as a member of the team ensuring the vision and values of Hengoed Care are upheld by yourself in words and in actions.
It is expected that a care assistant as a front-line member of the wider team will, ensure that the Human Rights of residents are acknowledged at all times.
The role will involve having an active role in the well-being of residents, encouraging activities and taking time to talk and get to know the person.
Person skills and qualities required for this role
1. The care assistant must have a passion for working with people in a person-centred way. There must be a willingness to adapt to different situations.
2. The care assistant must be able to accept direction from senior staff, ask for help if they feel not confident and always report anything that concerns them throughout the shift.
3. When on duty, it is the responsibility of the care team to ensure beds are made, rooms are clean with a level of tidiness expected by the resident.
4. Equipment used in the care home e.g wheelchairs & footplates, STAND aids, will be kept clean and in good condition before handing to another colleague.
5. At all times personal care whether directly given or as a supervisor assisting the resident, must be delivered with dignity and respect.
6. Glasses, hearing aids and dentures will be cleaned as part of dignity in care.
7. It is expected that through conversation or other forms of communication residents will be offered choice to help maintain their independence as much as possible. This often means that time will need to be taken to allow the resident to make their own choices, however limited.
8. Make visitors and family members feel welcomed, by being friendly and courteous, always wear a name tag.
9. Where residents have limited mobility, mental health and learning difficulties, ensure any aids are used correctly. These may be for communication, walking, eating etc.
10. The care assistant must be able to use an iPod, with good oral skills to report situations and written/IT skills to complete care needs and tasks undertaken on the person-centred software system.(PCS)
11. Assist residents during mealtimes where required. Make sure your residents every day eat and drink what is planned in their electronic notes. Where food is refused or meals missed or less than should be eaten, report to line manager immediately. Assist in food/snack areas as requested.
12. At all times when someone is end of life, treat the resident and their loved ones with dignity and respect.
13. Escort residents to appointments when asked.
