Location: 1620 Sixth Line Rd RR #1, Dunrobin, ON K0A 1T0
Type: Casual part-time contract, hourly rate of $15.81.

What you offer?

Reporting to the Camp Director, the Otonabee Summer Camp Inclusion Counsellor provides 1-on-1 support to children and youth with physical and/or cognitive disabilities, and support to other counsellors with other groups of children and youth. The Camp Inclusion Counsellor ensures that children and teens have a positive experience leading to personal growth through fun and rewarding recreation and sport programs. This position fosters self-esteem; problem solving and conflict resolution skills in program participants while working to create an atmosphere of safety, belonging and positive development in accordance with Y policies and procedures.

The Camp Inclusion Counsellor presents a professional appearance and attitude at all times, and ensures excellent customer service is provided to members and participants by proactively addressing concerns or issues and escalating them to the Camp Director as necessary. This position ensures that health and safety regulations and YMCA policies and procedures are upheld. The Camp Inclusion Counsellor adheres to and ensures that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA of the National Capital Region are conveyed to members, staff and volunteers with every interaction.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a personal commitment to and understanding of the Y’s mission, vision, values.

Some of the tasks of this position include:

  • Support: Providing one on one and two on one support to children with special needs. Assist in developing program inclusion strategies to create a positive experience for all campers. Manage behavioral incidents and implement behavioral redirection strategies as necessary
  • Safety: To be responsible for the safety, supervision, and security of all participants in your care at all times by following the YMCA Policies and Procedures
  • Administration: Complete all necessary paperwork accurately and in a timely manner (site checks, program paperwork, incident reports, pre-camp phone calls, staff meetings, and parent feedback).
  • Act as a resource today camp staff team in terms of inclusive programming
  • Demonstrate strong support and commitment to serving the membership, facility users, and all program participants of the YMCA of the National Capital Region.
  • All other duties as assigned

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education

  • High School Diploma, Post-Secondary Education
  • Educational background and work experience with children with disabilities and their families

Language

  • Fluent in English, oral and written essential
  • Bilingualism an asset

Experience, Abilities & Skills

  • Educational background and work experience with children with disabilities and their families
  • General experience working in a day camp or overnight camp setting are considered as an asset
  • Well-developed interpersonal, conflict resolution skills and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with children, members, staff and volunteers
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with program participants, members, staff and volunteers
  • Communication is verbal and physical, can be in groups or one on one
  • Ability to maintain calm demeanor in stressful situations
  • Ability to be energetic and outgoing
  • Ability to give first priority to the campers’ needs
  • Provide behavior management of campers
  • Ability to be self-motivating, enthusiastic and a responsible individual with strong leadership skills
  • Committed to the healthy development of children

Additional Requirements:

  • Applicants must already have a valid permit to work in Canada.
  • Criminal Reference Check for the Vulnerable Sector, not more than 6 months old is required
  • Annually all staff must complete the mandatory training for the Protecting Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Persons, and submit the certificate of completion.
