THE POSITION
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the AutoCAD Designer manages multiple projects, reviewing project requirements for the preparation of submittal drawings for custom miscellaneous metal products. The AutoCAD Designer works closely onsite with the sales, engineering, purchasing and production team to create detailed drawings for our customers, production staff, and vendors.

Responsibilities
- Review sales order, tender documents, construction drawings and specifications for the preparation of shop drawings in AutoCAD to be included in the submittal package.
- Correspond with clients and consultants to discuss project requirements and timelines.
- Make sketches, 2D drawings and 3D models as needed to communicate design proposals.
- Note any discrepancies between the sales order and tender package and bring these to the attention of the sales staff or production manager for resolution.
- Coordinate with Engineering Manager and 3rd party Engineering Consultant for input related to structural, mechanical, and/or overall feasibility of the design.
- Work with purchasing to determine material availability and supplier capabilities.
- Create bill of material; listing grade, size and quantity of materials required.
- Make fabrication drawings for parts and products fabricated in house.
- Produce part and assembly drawings for items manufactured by vendors.
- Collaborate with the production manager, incorporating measurements, details and views on the fabrication drawings as required by the shop.
- Create layout drawings to nest parts, optimize yield and reduce waste.
- Assist the production staff in troubleshoot any issues they come across when processing material or building the product.
- Contribute to building our internal library of products, parts, and extrusions.
- Work closely with welders and shop floor personnel, answering questions and explaining design details as needed.
- Represent MSU with customers, consultants, contractors, and suppliers.
- Facilitate the flow of information and product to best serve the needs of the customer and company.
Required
- Minimum of 2 years drafting and modelling experience.
- Strong knowledge of drafting concepts and hands-on experience with AutoCAD.
- A basic understanding of metal fabrication processes and welding.
- Ability to read blueprints and specifications.
- Detail oriented, highly organized, resourceful, and able to manage multiple projects.
- Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced team environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong work ethic with a sense of responsibility, ownership, and accountability.
- Ability to meet assigned deadlines, collaborate effectively with the team and work autonomously as required.
- Solid math and measurement skills (i.e., conversion from fractional to decimal and metric to imperial).
Preferred
- Experience with metal fabrication or custom manufacturing.
- Working knowledge and experience with Inventor or other software within Autodesk’s Product Design and Manufacturing Collection.
- Related College or University degree such as Civil, Mechanical or Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Project Management or Engineering Design and Drafting Technology.
- Knowledge of provincial or municipal standards, building code requirements, and occupational health and safety guidelines.
- Previous work experience in a related industry; Metal Fabrication, Manufacturing,
Construction, Water and Wastewater, Precast Concrete, and/or Civil Infrastructure.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual base salary of $60,000-$70,000; less statutory deductions.
- Company paid for extended health benefits including medical, dental, life insurance and long-term disability.
- 2 weeks’ vacation per year. Vacation is accrued and taken in the same calendar year.
- $230 annual work boot allowance upon completion of 3-month probationary period.
- 7am to 3pm office hours with two 15 min paid breaks.
- Reimbursement for all pre-approved business-related expenses.
