About the role
The Business Strategy team supports TfL in setting and maintaining a coherent strategic direction for the organisation. The role holder will provide the Business Strategy team with flexible support in all areas of its remit, which includes:
- Setting the long-term corporate strategy, including ‘think pieces’ about possible future scenarios and options that ultimately shape the direction of TfL’s activities and investments
- Coordinating longer-term plans for investment in our assets – track, trains, buses, bridges, and so on
- Developing the corporate scorecard indicators and targets with director and business information stakeholders
- Responsible for TfL’s involvement with international benchmarking and learning best practice through the Community of Metros (CoMET) and other benchmarking groups
- One-off strategic consultancy style projects (past examples include Brexit planning, Covid-19 recovery)
We are a small, high performing team that works flexibly together to complete tasks speedily and to a high standard. The role holder will be capable of supporting projects and work of a defined scope and scale. We often work to tight deadlines and in an ambiguous environment, balancing a high-level view with attention to detail. Our ways of working include facilitating workshops, collaborating in small groups, using spreadsheets, and creating concise and striking PowerPoint slides and reports. We work with senior, demanding stakeholders, and our work can have a real impact.

Key Responsibilities
- Define problems and assess options, and create reports and presentations to facilitate effective strategy discussions at board/de committee level
- Manage ongoing benchmarking activities and day-to-day requests, and co-ordinating longer-term projects. Use and promote benchmarking information across the organisation to support continuous improvement and progressive change
- Support and assist long term investment programme prioritisation.
- Support the definition and development of TfL’s scorecard, taking responsibility for some elements
- Plan, facilitate and write up workshops to assist projects, strategy and scorecard development or benchmarking, ensuring required outputs are met
- Develop and maintain relationships with a network of people across TfL
Key Stakeholders
- Work closely with the other Business Strategy teams, the Operations and Capital teams, and the rest of the Strategy & Innovation directorate
- Liaise with business information teams across TfL to obtain and use data to inform strategy, scorecard and business case development
- Work with teams across London Underground to obtain and disseminate information for our international benchmarking activities
- People or teams who commission Business Strategy to do a piece of work.

Knowledge

- Some strategy techniques such as scorecards, benchmarking, strategy mapping, strategic fact-finding, problem solving or continuous improvement methodologies (Desirable)
- Awareness of TfL's strategic context and operations, or the major similarities that can be applied from equivalent organisations (Desirable)
