Job description

An opportunity has arisen to support our Parks, Leisure and Libraries Services work.

Parks, Leisure and Library Services deliver a range of services, with the aim of making Sheffield a place where people choose to live, work, visit and invest. We work with a range of partner organisations to deliver Sheffield's sporting, physical activity, parks & countryside, events, libraries and archive services and facilities. We also look after bereaved families through our Bereavement Services and work with the South Yorkshire West Senior Coroner to provide the medico legal centre (public mortuary) and coroner’s court.

Working closely with the Director, Head of Service, Management team and wider staff team, the successful candidate will play a critical role in developing and supporting our wide range of customer services and leading on coordinating the service area business plans, with particular focus on customer service and back-office service delivery.

The post holder will receive support and direction from the Director and Heads of Service but is expected to operate with a level of self-sufficiency and autonomy. The successful candidate will need to have experience of working in a busy business management / support function and be confident working with senior leaders both inside and outside of the council.

We are looking for a forward thinking, proactive individual who can demonstrate the following skills and attributes:

  • A commitment to our Council values:
  • People are at the heart of what we do
  • Openness and honesty are important to us
  • Together we get things done
  • Ability to react positively to change; a creative thinker who provides innovative solutions to meet service objectives and deliver effective results.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) for a variety of internal and external audiences.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure to meet fixed deadlines.
  • Ability to manage and implement challenging objectives by developing work plans, organising, prioritising, and setting realistic timescales to meet service deadlines.
  • A commitment to principles of performance management and continuous improvement (including some elements of contract management)
  • Ability to demonstrate tact and maintain confidentiality.

It is essential that the successful candidate has a flexible and resourceful approach, is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and has the drive and aptitude to acquire new skills quickly. Previous experience of working with external partners and/or elected members would be advantageous but is not essential.

Additional information

This post is advertised as full-time, however there is scope for flexibility if the successful candidate wishes to work fewer hours. We would require a minimum of 28 hours per week, to be worked over at least 4 days. There is flexibility about working days.

We work in a hybrid way and our office base is currently Union St, Sheffield City Centre, Sheffield S1 2SH. The successful candidate can work from any of our local offices as well as from home and this can be discussed and agreed on appointment.

Please feel free to contact Nicki Robson via email ([email protected]) to arrange an informal conversation about the role.

We are investing in our workforce and are promoting opportunities to our under-represented groups. We value equality, diversity and inclusion and are focused on increasing the diversity of our workforce, particularly the number of Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic, Disabled and LGBTQ+ people, so that our teams reflect the communities in the city we serve. We are also supporting staff with unpaid caring responsibilities to work flexibly.

It is a great time to join us and we welcome your application.

Under the Disability Confident Scheme, disabled applicants, who meet the essential criteria of this job, are guaranteed an interview.

Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part time or as a job share.
