The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is home to one of the world’s leading research facilities, the ISIS neutron spallation source. ISIS uses neutrons to probe the structure of matter to the atomic level. The facility carries out 1000s of experiments every year and on a wide range of samples, from simple and complex compounds to new alloys, to engineering structures to biological samples and pharmaceuticals.

The ISIS Electronics and Electrical User Support Group (EEUSG) has a vacancy for electronics engineer to lead our Project Development team. This is a new and an expanding section that already enjoys success with a diverse portfolio of technical projects.

Some recent projects undertaken by the Project Development Team:

  • Electronic control and automation of high temperature and low temperature devices (for example, furnaces and cryostats)
  • Automation of gas flow processes used to rapidly cool furnaces using helium gas.
  • Pneumatic automation control system for a mechanical device designed to increase the speed that a sample’s temperature can be changed through fast thermal transfer.
  • Electronic control system used for the precise automation of humidity environments.
  • A control system used in engineering research to apply a wide range of tension and compression loads to samples.
  • Project using robotic arm technology to aid experimental work.
  • Specialist wiring projects for equipment used on the ISIS beamlines.
  • Bespoke electronic and electrical devices needed for ISIS experiments.

The Project Development team is having to grow to meet the rising demands of the ISIS experiments and our scientists. We are looking for a candidate offering proven managerial and leadership skills together with experience in electronic system development.

Technical responsibilities and opportunities:

  • Provide technical and managerial leadership for all projects.
  • Be a leading figure in design reviews with customers and stakeholders.
  • Be able to present clear and informative feedback on the status of the team’s project work at the regular progress meetings.
  • Be able to provide effective solutions for proposed projects modelled on the cost, time, and quality triangle.
  • Technical Lead – This is a hands-on role where you can build on your technical skills by leading your own projects.
  • Maintain a high level of professional technical competency through formal courses and the attendance of workshops and conferences.

Management responsibilities:

  • Ensure all project work adheres to the principles set out in the ISIS Project Management Framework.
  • Plan, prioritise, and control the workflow within the Project Development team.
  • Shape and maintain good relationships with other teams within ISIS.
  • Oversee all training and personal development of Project Development staff, including our graduate and apprentice placement students.
  • Showcase the work of the section at conferences and workshops both in the UK and internationally.
  • Provide guidance on all health and safety issues.

Person Specification:

Please indicate whether you will assess each criterion through shortlisting (S), at Interview (I) or both (S&I)

  • Qualified to degree level, or equivalent, in Electronics or Electronics and Electrical Engineering. Significant work experience will also be considered for candidates without a degree (S)
  • A successful track record in the leadership and management of a technical team (S&I)
  • Be able to describe successful project management (and leadership) of previous electronics projects (S&I)
  • Proven people management skills (I)
  • A good working knowledge of general project management practices (I)
  • A track record of strong individual contributions to electronics related projects (S&I)
  • Strong communication skills. Such skills are vital in developing and maintaining relationships with other ISIS Groups and our customers. (S&I)
  • An understanding of the principles of good customer relations and practises (I).
  • An appreciation of safety in the workplace (I)
