About our Apprenticeship
As a Building Services Technical Apprentice you will work within a team of engineers and other professionals in the design of various installations found in buildings. As an apprentice you will engage with the latest digital engineering and BIM tools whilst developing a knowledge of the smart technologies and innovations which are shaping the buildings of the future. Buildings take on many forms from newly built facilities to the refurbishment of historic premises for every sector including healthcare (hospitals), education (schools, colleges, universities), workplace (offices), retail (shopping outlets) and leisure (hotels) both in the UK and internationally.
During your apprenticeship at BDP no two days will ever be the same as you study. Spending one day a week at University of Central Lancashire and the remainder working at our Manchester studio.
You’ll study towards a Level 6 Apprenticeship in Building services. On completion, you will have fully satisfied the requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer by the relevant professional engineering institution.
Not only will you learn in the classroom, you’ll also enjoy being part of our interdisciplinary team as you get involved with all kinds of projects and learn something new every day. Including but not exclusive to:
- Working as part of the building services team within our Manchester office, each apprentice will have opportunities to learn about mechanical, electrical and public health design as well as other areas such as acoustics, lighting and sustainability.
- You will have the opportunity to work as part of the wider interdisciplinary team which includes: Architects, Civil and Structural, Design Management, Interior Design, Landscape and urbanism.
- The successful applicants will work as part of our design team, our current projects cover a wide range of building types such as offices, universities and schools, hospitals and laboratories historic buildings and sport and leisure facilities.
- Alongside your training at university you will be taught how to use computer modelling packages such as Revit, IES and ElectricalOM.
- Attend meetings both in the studio and on site.
- Partake in internal and external training sessions and go out to visit construction sites
Our environmental design group houses building services, mechanical, electrical, public health and infrastructure engineers, specialist lighting designers, acoustic and sustainability consultants, BREEAM assessors and building physicists.
Subject to your progress, there may be an opportunity to go on to further study to enable you to be qualified to achieve Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
Qualifications Required:
- Applicants must hold 5 GCSEs A-C, including Maths and English or equivalent (reformed GCSEs grade 4 or above).
And or one of the following:
- 96 UCAS points at A2 including Maths or equivalent.
- BTEC Extended Diploma: MMM in Engineering including Maths units
- BTEC Diploma: DD including Maths units
- Pass Access Course: 96 points including 15 Level 3 credits in Maths
- International Baccalaureate Diploma: Pass including 96 points from Higher Level subjects including Higher Level 5 in Maths
- IELTS: 6.0 with no score component than 5.5

- be able to communicate in written English to a good standard
- have excellent communication skills and be able to work well in a team
- be able to manage your own time and have a simple understanding of prioritisation
- be able to produce neat and accurate work

The team’s portfolio covers a wide range of sectors, scales, clients and building types. Recently completed projects include Oldham Town Hall redevelopment, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Victoria Station Manchester, BOXPARK Croydon.
