Building Services Design Engineer

Our offices are based in Manchester, hybrid working is encouraged however attendance at the office 2-3 days per week is desired.
Typically, our turnkey projects range between £150k to £5m+ and include roof-mounted PV, ground-mounted solar PV, including complimentary technologies such as energy storage, DNO LV upgrades, LV electrical installations, LED lighting upgrades & commercial heat pump upgrades.
As a building services design engineer you will work closely with end-user clients and the internal bid team to design and cost heating systems. Responsibilities will include undertaking technical site surveys, detailed designs, equipment specifications & detailed budget estimation.

Overview of role:
This role will focus on the design of turnkey renewable heating solutions covering air-source, ground-source and water-sourced heat pump projects for large scale, commercial projects with key clients, typically Local Authorities, NHS Trusts and Universities.
Manage and support an ever-growing renewables heating technologies department across the business, including the site assessment and design of potential projects and planning and successful delivery of client projects.
Attending site to prepare comprehensive and accurate surveys, calculations, designs and quotes for projects, ensuring details are communicated to relevant stakeholders. The post holder will be required to provide support and guidance to engineers during the project and will carry out Quality inspections once the works are complete to ensure fully compliant installs.
Responsible for providing technical support, encouragement and training for all existing and future Renewables Engineers and sub-contractors, assisting with the management of Engineers and delivery of projects to strict client deadlines with a professional and courteous approach.
This is a vital role in the delivery of Quality of Work and must have a professional attitude and keen desire for future development of the business, creating an environment which encourages employee development, good employee relations, teambuilding, and quality standards.
- Provide technical support and oversight at tender stage to ensure projects are assessed and system design, specification, performance, quality and project timescales are deliverable.
- Protect the interests of the Company and develop good working relationships with Clients, Consultants, Sub-contractors and Suppliers.
- Ensure that all designs and bids are delivered on time, within budget, and to the Clients requirements.
- To manage and co-ordinate design to ensure project delivery in accordance with Business Plan targets, industry KPI’s, ISO 9001, 14001,18001, H & S Policy, and Best Practice and Quality procedures file.
Whilst primarily focused in the Northwest, the position will initially involve travel (throughout the UK) to client sites as well as working away from time to time to assess potential projects. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual and team player, with the communication skills, energy and focus to manage and support a busy pipeline of projects.
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum 5 years designing commercial HVAC systems
- Renewable heating experience is a significant advantage
- HNC/HND/Degree in Mechanical or building services engineering (Essential)
- Chartered Heating Engineer (Desirable)
- Experience AutoCAD, IES & relevant MEP design software (Essential)
- Engineering technical excellence and pride in work / project outcomes
- Strong Project Management skills, ensuring optimal design and costs on all projects
- Strong engineering thinking, combined with financial & commercial awareness
- Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise well when designing multiple projects concurrently
- Strong attention to detail, accurate and methodical in work to overcome challenges and see projects through to completion
- Ability to deal with complex tasks under pressure
- Clear communicator, confident in communicating and influencing at all levels
- Ability to build professional relationships with clients to generate confidence and deliver successful outcomes
- Travel throughout the Northwest and occasionally in the UK
