Job Description


We are looking for hardworking and enthusiastic Civil & Structural Engineering apprentices to join our Bridges teams across the UK. Successful candidates will work on a variety of projects from concept design to implementation for clients who operate either locally, nationally or internationally. Those selected will have to be focused on delivery of results to our clients whilst finding enjoyment in technically challenging projects.

Our undisputable global position could give you the chance to undertake the assessment and maintenance of the current UK bridge network, or propose renewal structural works for a central station. With both international and domestic clients, we are committed to providing quality, innovative and sustainable solutions using the latest technology in civil & structural engineering whilst taking advantage of our integrated range of services by collaborating with other disciplines within AECOM. Some recent examples of our works include Thames Tideway new sewer under the River Thames; Wessex Capacity Alliance £350M rail enhancement project including Waterloo Station; London Highways Alliance Contract for Transport for London (TfL) bridge maintenance schemes from investigation through to detailed design; and Beaulieu Bridge Design in Chelmsford.

You will use industry leading computer software while working on a variety of different bridge specific expertise including:

  • Production of CAD (Computer Aided Design) drawings
  • Undertaking graphical structural design and desk top publishing
  • Supporting the administration of projects, including maintaining records
  • Assisting with data review and analysis
  • Contributing to providing solutions to problems
  • Assisting with site visits to collect information or observe existing situations
  • Working towards achieving Engineering Technician (EngTech) status, and subsequently Incorporated Engineer (IEng) with the Institute of Civil Engineers or the Institute of Structural Engineers

Qualifications


No work experience is necessary. This position is ideally suited to school leavers at SCQF Level 6 (or equivalent) who can demonstrate the following:

  • A minimum of Scottish Highers BBBC including Mathematics and one science subject. An appropriate foundation or Modern Apprenticeship will also be considered towards meetings these entry requirements
  • Three A-Levels (or equivalent such as a BTEC Level 3 in Civil Engineering) including Maths and a physical science at grade 'C' or above - essential for level 6 Degree Apprenticeship
  • Some work experience or shadowing in an engineering environment would be an advantage
  • Show an aptitude towards software-based engineering and drawing e.g. Computer Aided Design (CAD) and other similar 3D software
  • Demonstrate an interest and a desire to pursue a career in Bridge Structures Engineering
  • Commitment to continued education and improvement through on-the-job learning and training opportunities.
  • Creative, practical, adaptable and enthusiastic
  • Ability to demonstrate attention to detail
  • Ability to think in a methodical way to design, plan and organize parts of projects
  • English language proficient, holding excellent communication skills to present information in speech, drawings and reports
