Job description
The successful candidate will be working in the operational arm of the Home Office's Foreign National Offender Returns Command, the Immigration Prison Team.
You would gather information from foreign national offenders held within prisons, Immigration Removal Centres, and those on immigration bail in the community, with a view to removing them from the UK by deportation on conclusion of their sentence or as soon as possible afterwards.
The majority of Immigration Prison Team staff carry out a key frontline role in prisons carrying out immigration interviews, working to establish nationality and identity and supporting case owners to enable the timely progression of foreign national offenders (FNOs) to deportation or administrative removal.

This is very much a ‘hands on’ role which has an element of office-based work but involves a large part of the working day on prison wings dealing with prisoners face-to-face. You will respond to requests from caseworkers, undertake asylum interviews and gather any information required to procure a deportation order and subsequently remove that individual from the United Kingdom.
You will induct new arrivals at the prison, regularly updating prisoners on the progress of their case and serve relevant paperwork as it is sent from the casework teams. You will have a solid understanding of the deportation process (training provided) and will be able to give an overview of the immigration process.

Things you need to know
Selection process details
This gives us the best possible chance of finding the right person for the job, drives up performance and improves diversity and inclusivity.
As part of the application process you will be asked to complete a Behaviour example and a Statement of Suitability (Max Word Limit: 500 words).
Further details around what this will entail are listed on the application form.
Please note your Statement of Suitability should be aligned to demonstrate your skills and experience for the role and how you meet the essential criteria as detailed in the job description. The statement is your opportunity to give examples of how you fit the requirements of the job. When writing a statement, it is important that you read the job specification, so you are clear about the job requirements. Outline the skills and experience that you have that are relevant to the job and use examples to help demonstrate this. Wherever possible include specific facts and figures that demonstrate the tangible results of your work. Keep to the word limit. If your statement is too brief it will not provide the required depth of detail and evidence to be assessed fully.
The Statement of Suitability will be scored first for all candidates. Those candidates who achieve the minimum pass score for the Statement of Suitability, will progress to a further sift where the Lead Behaviour: Changing and Improving will be scored. These candidates will therefore receive a sift score for both elements. Candidates who fail to meet the minimum pass score for the Statement of Suitability will not have their Lead Behaviour scored and will therefore only receive a sift score for the Statement of Suitability.
Candidates who pass the initial sift may be progressed to a full sift or progressed straight to interview.
Candidates shortlisted will be invited to an interview which will be a blended approach of Strength-based questions (no preparation necessary) and a Behaviour based question.
The Civil Service Behaviours are one element of the Success Profile. These are the things that people do that result in effective performance. An example of a Civil Service behaviour is ‘Changing and Improving’. Candidates are encouraged to click here https://www.civil-service-careers.gov.uk/behaviours/ to explore the best way of presenting their behaviour example.
When looking at your strengths, we want to find out whether you and the organisation or job role are a good fit. We will look at what you enjoy doing and what you do well and often. By ensuring that the role is the right fit for you, you are more likely to enjoy it and perform well. Candidates are encouraged to read the attached guidance to help you understand the Strength based approach.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to time constraints we may not be able to offer alternative interview date(s). It is therefore expected that candidates who are successful at sift stage will make themselves available during the above time frame given.
Sift and Interview dates
Sift will take place week commencing 27th February 2023.
Interviews will take place week commencing 13th March 2023.
We will try to meet the dates set out in the advert. There may be occasions when these dates will change. You will be provided with sufficient notice of the confirmed dates.
Candidates will be invited to attend interview which will be either Face to Face or alternatively may utilise MS Teams or Skype.
