Job description

Border Force check all passengers and freight arriving in the UK by air and sea and conduct intelligence-led searches for prohibited, counterfeit or restricted goods such as drugs, firearms, weapons, cash, tobacco, and alcohol. We also support the department’s wider agenda in high-profile areas such as counter terrorism, tackling organised crime, modern slavery, and human trafficking. This is some of the most important and challenging work in Government and its impact can be felt in communities across the UK.

Manston Operations Welfare & Safeguarding Team Officer

The Manston Welfare & Safeguarding Team is a dynamic and responsive team responsible for enhancing the quality and frequency of contact with asylum seekers, migrants and vulnerable people arriving on small boats after crossing the English Channel.

Primarily operating in Manston Reception Centre, you will be required to engage through face-to-face interaction to ensure individual’s needs are being met. A keen interest in caregiving, a compassionate nature, experience in safeguarding, mental health support or charitable work would be beneficial in this role.

These posts attract an AHA package of 27.9% (subject to annual review).

Person specification

As a member of the Welfare and Safeguarding Team you will be required to:

  • Meet face-to-face with new arrivals to Manston during initial induction and follow up engagements.
  • Record and accurately maintain records of interactions with individuals in a timely manner.
  • Identify issues surrounding health, welfare and wellbeing and ensure suitable goods, services, support and medical attention are sought and provided.
  • Ensure indicators of vulnerability are recorded and individuals are supported in-line with Home Office policy and guidance.
  • Work closely with onsite contractors, healthcare providers and wider Home Office colleagues to ensure robust wellbeing, welfare services and other goods are provided.
  • Complete end of shift checklists, highlighting all welfare issues and what action were taken to resolve those issues.
  • Undertake administration including managing arrival and departure lists, compiling management reports and other admin duties.
