Bookseller Wanted

Much Ado is an award-winning bookshop in a rural community, with an opportunity for someone who would enjoy sharing their enthusiasm for books, to work full- or part-time.

The job requires excellent customer service skills, a broad knowledge of books, and the ability to perform physically and mentally taxing tasks. Experience in retail is preferred; bookshop experience is even better.

Our rural location demands staff have personal transport – please don’t imagine that public transportation would suffice!

Work schedules will include some weekend days.

Duties will include - but are not be limited to:

· Maintaining our reputation for dependable advice and friendly service

· Assisting and advising customers with book selections

· Operating equipment including cash register, telephone and computer

· Carrying and unpacking boxes which may be quite heavy

· Shelving books

· Keeping sections neat and tidy

· Creating compelling and delightful book displays

· Helping develop, plan and assist at events, sometimes during evenings

· Advising on books we stock

· Working with antiquarian books, including on-line listing and posting

· Assisting with social media and website development and upkeep

To do well in this position, aspiring booksellers must have wide-ranging appreciation for books - we will want applicants to demonstrate a thorough, ongoing interest in current publishing trends, reviews, upcoming books across a range of subjects.

The job demands a careful attention to detail; strong verbal and written communication skills; and a cooperative spirit. Experience with - and enthusiasm for - crafts will be a strong plus. Punctuality and dependability are essential.

Pay will be commensurate with experience and responsibilities.
