Bookkeeping Assistant
Job Description
Responsible to: Bookkeeper
Liaison with: Clergy and professional team, lay leaders.
Hours: 8 hours per week
Job Purpose: to provide bookkeeping and financial administration.
Salary: £14 per hour
Responsibilities
1. Invoicing
- Process invoices
- Ensure Sage records are accurate, updated and reconciled.
- Manage suppliers’ direct debits and invoices.
- Process bimonthly payment runs
- Keep relevant spreadsheet, files and systems updated.
- Ensure relevant departments are updated about income and expenditure.
2. Banking and PayPal
- Monitor bank accounts and cash flow, including reconciling bank statements.
- Reconcile monthly credit card statements across the organisation and post to Sage.
- Manage PayPal reconciliation and post to Sage.
- Bank any cash or cheques received and ensure relevant records are updated and reconciled.
3. Other
- Participate in regular staff meetings and all forums required to fulfil the role.
- Participate in annual appraisal and development review.
- Carry out any other duties and training commensurate with the nature of the post, as may be required by the Bookkeeper to ensure the smooth running of the synagogue.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times.

Person Specification
Experience
We are looking for someone who has experience of:
- Experience of bookkeeping in a small organisation
- Working on own initiative successfully
- Working effectively under pressure
Skills & Abilities
We are looking for someone who can demonstrate the following:
- Excellent financial and bookkeeping skills
- Ability to work efficiently with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent presentation, group dynamic, and facilitation skills
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
Special Knowledge
If would be advantageous if you can demonstrate:
- Excellent computer skills to include advanced level of Excel, Sage, and financial packages.
- An understanding of the importance of excellent ‘customer service’
- Knowledge/understanding of the UK Jewish community (not essential)
