The Union Cooperative Initiative (UCI) is hiring a new Bookkeeper to support the growing union cooperative movement in British Columbia. The Bookkeeper will coordinate internal finances and the UCI budgets. Additionally, the Bookkeeper will provide financial support to UCI members and incubated cooperatives as a part of our service offerings.
BACKGROUND
The UCI is a new non-profit multi-stakeholder cooperative established in 2021 to support the development of union cooperatives as part of a growing social and solidarity economy movement in British Columbia.
Our cooperative builds an economy that works for all by supporting the creation, incubation, and operation of unionized cooperatives that provide family sustaining and flexible jobs that are good for people and the planet, provide business opportunities for underserved communities, and are accountable to the communities we serve.
The UCI currently operates three main program areas: cooperative development services with value-aligned partner organizations, a worker training program that includes the delivery of the BCFED Organizing Institute, and cooperative Incubation and support services.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Operations Coordinator and Managing Director, the UCI is seeking a Bookkeeper on a 7.5-hour / 1 day a week contract. Regular work days are Tuesday from 11 am to 630 pm to start. There is some flexibility on hours of work after the probationary period has been completed.
The Bookkeeper will coordinate internal finances and the UCI budgets. Additionally, the Bookkeeper will provide financial support to UCI members and incubated cooperatives as a part of our service offerings.
A passion for community development, dedication to social and economic justice, and interest in building a solidarity economy is required. Community-focused applicants with experience in the labour movement, non-profits, and arts are encouraged to apply.
This position is a half-year contract until December 31, 2023, made possible through core operational funding from the Alliance for Cooperative Development and Vancity Savings Credit Union and will be extended should grant funding be renewed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 5 or more years experience in a lead or independent administrative role with a focus on bookkeeping, payroll, and finances or a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or a related field
- Strong working knowledge of accounting principles, financial statements, and accounting systems.
- Proficient in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office with advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets.
- Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks or experience with other tax preparation and accounting software.
- Familiarity with online sales and invoicing platforms including Shopify and Square.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Detail-oriented, self starter with the ability to prioritize tasks.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to adapt and integrate new technology trends.
Familiarity, understanding, and support of the principles of labour unions and cooperatives is essential for success in this role. Additional spoken and written language skills are an asset.
JOB DUTIES
Although this position is a part of a team, this work is primarily self-directed and requires strong time management, scheduling and organizational skills.Key responsibilities include:
- Maintain the UCI budget.
- Process and record expenses, invoices, and payroll weekly.
- Prepare monthly reports and expense statements.
- Send quotes, invoices, and process billing weekly.
- Provide administrative support as needed.
- Prepare and submit tax returns.
- Meet and greet visitors to the UCI studio.
- Make necessary travel and booking arrangements.
- Create and maintain filing systems for hard copy and electronic files.
- Other duties as assigned by Operations Coordinator or the Managing Director.
Member and incubated cooperative supports:
- Develop bookkeeping systems and procedures for members and incubated cooperatives.
- Provide bookkeeping best practices and coaching support for members.
- Deliver bookkeeping services to members, incubated cooperatives, and partners on fee for service contracts.
- Other duties as assigned by the Operations Coordinator or the Managing Director.
WAGES AND BENEFITS
$36.06 an hour with 10% in lieu of benefits. Operations workers at the UCI are covered under collective agreement with the Arts and Cultural Workers Union (ACWU), IATSE Local B778.
