Job Summary
The Department of Statistics at UBC is a growing academic unit within the Faculty of Science with activities in research, education, and consulting. Since the Department's founding in 1984, we have had a consistent vision of the discipline of Statistics and of our role in shaping it through our activities in education, in methodological and applied research, and in support of subject area research. This vision is also consistent with the newly emerged field of Data Science.
The position will be responsible for consulting on study design, data analysis and development and application of robust multivariate methods for the integration of high-dimensional data collected on patients with Parkinson Disease (PD) and on related projects.
This project is grant funded and is a one-year term position.
Organizational Status
The biostatistician will be working with Drs. Gabriela Cohen Freue (Statistics) and Silke Cresswell (Medicine/Neurology) on a project studying the integration of microbiome, nutrition, metabolomics, genetics and clinical data to design the best diet for patients suffering from Parkinson Disease (PD) and on related projects. Most of the work is conducted in the Department of Statistics on UBC Point Grey Campus, and some meetings may take place off-campus at medical facilities.

Work Performed
  • Developing statistical methods to address the complexity expected from this project, including cellwise outliers, correlated features, high-dimensional datasets, diverse data types.
  • Analyzing data using reproducible and transparent scripts
  • Interpreting statistical results and evaluating effectiveness of methods
  • Creating figures and visuals
  • Writing code and preparing statistical software packages in R
  • Extracting information for research analysis
  • Preparing presentations and publications
  • Providing feedback and advise to researchers on study design
  • Mentoring and training undergraduate/junior graduate research assistants

Consequence of Error/Judgement
A high level of judgment is associated with this position. Errors in data analyses or in the maintenance of, and the assurance of the accuracy and consistency of, data could result in a waste of financial resources, non-renewal or research funding, or loss of currently held funding. Inadequate documentation, organization, communication and planning may adversely affect the image and reputation of the research team, departments, and university.

Supervision Received
You will work independently with limited guidance from study directors. You are expected to be accountable for completing reliable work in a timely fashion.

You may provide technical guidance and mentoring to undergraduate or junior graduate research assistants.

Minimum Qualifications
Post-graduate degree in Statistics. Minimum of two years of related experience in research analysis, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Knowledge & Experience
  • Recent experience in biostatistical research and data analysis is required
  • Extensive knowledge of R statistical software and latest packages
  • Demonstrated expertise of Python programming language with a record of developed data science and other applications; experience with other programming languages a bonus
  • Experience with the Unix environment (shell and standard utilities); expertise with framework for large scale data processing on compute clusters a bonus
  • Experience working with databases; expertise with scaling approaches and non-traditional databases a bonus
  • Past experience with working with big data and machine learning applications a bonus.
  • Experience with modern software development practices, such as version control (esp. Git and Github), code review, issue management, continuous integration, and test-driven development
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Effective oral and written, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to convey statistical concepts and analysis results to non-specialists
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear and concise reports
  • Strong evidence of self-directed, self-motivated and independent research and analysis skills
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and direct junior colleagues and students
  • Ability to develop, prioritize, implement and oversee multiple time-sensitive research projects
