Haematology Band 5/6 depending on Qualifications and Experience

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist to work in a busy but friendly laboratory at Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals.

The ideal candidate will possess an accredited BSc (Hons) degree in Biomedical Sciences and will have completed a Specialist Portfolio in Haematology (or have equivalent qualification/experience) or be completed the Registration portfolio ( Band 5)

The post holder will work within the state of the art Blood Sciences department. In Haematology we currently process around 500,000 FBCs a year and have 4,000 active warfarin patients. We transfuse around 12,000 units of red cells per year.

The department is fully computerised utilising ISS Modulab and QPulse systems on both laboratory sites.

The department is approved by the IBMS for pre- and post-registration training and is ISO 15189 accredited.

You will be required to adopt flexible working patterns and may be required to work on either of the two laboratory sites. Once fully competent you will be expected to participate in round the clock provision of the laboratory services on an average 37.5 hour week if full time - part time hours available

The Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals is currently one of five Trusts involved in the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Transformation Programme. The aim is to design a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. The service will also be efficient and sustainable, encourage research and development in collaboration with Academia and Industry to improve health and innovation in the region and provide rewarding jobs and career opportunities for all staff.

Scientific and technical duties

Aiding the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of patient conditions using analytical skills and equipment.

Maintain the accuracy and integrity of the diagnostic testing process.

Exhibit fine motor skill when performing precision analytical tasks.

Use a range of scientific and technical equipment.

Have direct contact with a variety of body fluids, tissue or excrement.

React promptly to service demands such as clinical emergencies, equipment or IT failure.

Ensure request forms and samples match with each other and information held in health care data bases.

Participate in the provision of a 24/7 service as appropriate.

Analytical and interpretive responsibilities

Assess suitability and appropriateness of samples received, liaising with senior staff as necessary.

Perform and interpret diagnostic test results within the Health and Care Professions Council Code of Practice.

Could be expected to deal with products of conception, collapsed patients, sweat tests on babies and assisting in obtaining bone marrow samples.

Perform the analysis of samples, interpret data from the analytical process and authorise results as appropriate.

Service management or development

Register and retrieve patient details and test results on the laboratory data management system.

Compliance with the Health and Safety and Security policies of the Department and Division.

Compliance with all Corporate Policies and Procedures.

Attendance at laboratory meetings and performance appraisal as required.

Have the necessary expertise and technique to troubleshoot and repair equipment for optimal use.

Any other duties consistent with the grade and considered appropriate by senior staff.
