Job Description
We have an exciting opportunity for a senior Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist to join our Genomics team at HCA Labs - to help manage the HCA Cancer Pathway, facilitate rare genetic disease testing requests and help create and maintain department quality systems.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Deputise for the Technical Service Manager and also take on some of the regular managerial tasks
- Manage and apply the quality system as performed in the department to all aspects of the working process, including creating, following and updating SOPs.
- Help maintain equipment, good laboratory practice & housekeeping within the department.
- To be familiar with details of core genetic tests, referral laboratory repertoires, sample requirements, expected turnaround times and pricing, especially for tests on the Cancer Pathway.
- To be able to research and advise clinicians regarding new or bespoke requests, what tests are most appropriate, and to be able to compare and recommend regarding comprehensiveness, price and turnaround time.
- Liaise with healthcare professionals to obtain clinical details, appropriate consent and patient samples (ie. tumour blocks) to expedite testing.
- Accept blood, saliva, DNA & tissue samples and to register patient data using the in-house software (Meditech) and ensure it complies with minimum standards.
- Ensure that reports are returned and forwarded to the referring health professional in a timely and secure (encrypted) manner.
- Perform DNA extractions on a regular (weekly) basis and assist in its record keeping and safe long-term storage.
- Undertake routine operative maintenance on office and laboratory instrumentation, including the DNA Extraction machine and Tutela temperature monitoring of DNA freezer storage.
- Regularly stocktake and maintain supply of DNA extraction kits, consumables and collection kits particular to tests offered on the Cancer Pathway.
Skills & Experience
- Minimum Bachelor of Science degree, with at least 5-years working in a Clinical Genetics Laboratory. Experience in cancer genetics an advantage.
- HCPC Registered with continuing professional development in compliance with requirements.
- Be aware of current Quality Management standards and help ensure suitable systems are in place for Genomics Laboratory and Cancer Pathway.
- Detailed knowledge of medical, laboratory and particularly genetics terminology.
- Be computer literate – especially using Meditech and Microsoft Office.
- Understand and follow health & safety principles for good laboratory practice.
