Applications are invited from suitable candidates interested in joining our excellent team within the Blood Science Department of Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Services (CWPS). This post is based at the George Eliot site which will be the fully automated Hub lab for CWPS. This post is provides the opportunity to play an active role in this transformation. This post is a network post and the successful candidate will be expected to rotate between sites

The successful candidate will need to be willing to manage a busy workload, be forward thinking and keen to develop new skills. They must have good communication skills, be able to work successfully as part of a team and be able to work from one’s own initiative

  • Validation of full blood screen and coagulation screen
  • Blood morphology reporting
  • Manual Haematology techniques
  • Working in Blood transfusion, blood grouping, antibody identification and blood product issue.

The blood science service is a rapidly expanding part of the Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Network, which is based on the hospital sites at Coventry (University Hospital), Nuneaton (George Eliot Hospital), and Warwick (South Warwickshire Hospital). It offers a comprehensive range of Pathology services to a population of approximately 1.8 million Coventry and Warwickshire residents and has a close relationship with the Medical school at Warwick University. The network offers an excellent opportunity to those seeking employment in a modern, innovative and high-profile organisation.

CWPS is one of the largest Pathology Networks within the UK, it is UKAS accredited as a Network and is hosted by UHCW which is the second busiest trauma centre within the UK. As a Network we are very forward thinking and innovative and are currently part way through a major procurement project which will see the development of a major Hub laboratory within our network supported by three essential service laboratories. It offers the prospect for great career development and future opportunities.

The procurement project will be an extremely exciting project to be involved in and a once in a life time opportunity to be involved is such a large scale operation. There will be opportunities to be involved in the creation of a Hub laboratory and the validation and verification processes for the new instrumentation and blood science track. As part of this project we will be implementing a network digital imaging service and will be looking at new methods and technologies.
1. Perform daily routine and specialised diagnostic services on patient and environmental samples containing potentially infectious material. This will be done on a rotational basis using manual and automated techniques to exacting medical and scientific standards according to standard operating procedures
2. Perform daily interpretation of diagnostic investigations. Know how to proceed in the event of technical / analytical non conformity and when to inform the line manager
3. Accurate and timely entry of data onto the laboratory computer system and/or automated analysers using a VDU and keyboard workstation
4. As appropriate record reports for authorisation in electronic form and / or verbally to persons authorised to receive them
5. Quality check outputs including maintaining necessary internal record
6. Participate in external and internal quality assurance schemes and vertical and horizontal audits as directed by senior staff
7. Work to meet laboratory performance targets as directed by senior staf
8. Under supervision, develop and investigate new techniques as required by the changing needs of the service
9. To regularly inform and discuss progress of training towards a post registration specialist competence portfolio, with the laboratory training officer and other senior staff as appropriate

Supporting Tasks
1. Be aware of stocks of kits reagents and consumables and report stock deficiencies to senior staff
2. To participate in appraisals and personal reviews and work to agreed set objectives
3. To participate in shifts and out of hour’s services as required
4. To undertake phlebotomy as required after suitable training.
