The department embraces all aspects of a modern clinical
bacteriology service combining traditional methodologies with
laboratory automation. The department is a
designated IBMS training laboratory, has an extensive quality
system in operation and is fully accredited by UKAS. We are
seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated HCPC
registered BMS with post-registration experience and
understanding in clinical Microbiology.
We are seeking an EO grade Biomedical Scientist/HEO
grade Specialist Biomedical Scientist. The microbiology
partnership provides comprehensive routine services and
specialist services to a wide range of hospitals across the
North West and beyond and also assists in any UKHSA co-
ordinated responses or activity of a national/international
nature, e.g. Bioterrorism incident or major disease e.g enteric
outbreaks, COVID19, SARS.
The department requires staff to support the department in
delivering a comprehensive Microbiology service over 7
days. To achieve this it is possible that you will be required to
work within a rotational shift pattern which will include shifts
throughout the department's 24 hours a day 7 days per week
out of hours service.
Your main duties will include:
- Assessing the suitability and appropriateness of samples
advice following departmental sample acceptance policy.
- Ensuring data integrity when entering demographics
- Performing sample preparation, processing bodily
- Analysis of biological samples including more
skill risk specimens and reagent preparation following
protocols.
- Preparation and interpretation of identification tests
- Use and maintenance of manual and sophisticated
- Assist with the development of new methods and
- Ensuring that personal work activity is managed to
of laboratory consumables.
- Attending regular departmental meetings and contribute to
- Analysis of biological samples including more
skill risk specimens and reagent preparation following
protocols.
- Participate in audit processes, drug trials, research
- Participating in and monitoring Quality Assurance and
maintaining UKAS ISO15189 accreditation.

Evidence of previous supervision, health and safety and
quality systems is essential as you will be responsible for
supervising of junior staff in the department
Candidates will be encouraged to take a role in the
development of training plans for all grades of staff as
candidates will be expected to assist in the delivery of
departmental training plans and competency assessment.
The candidate will have played a role in the registration of
trainee Biomedical Scientists with experience of completing
the IBMS portfolio for registration. Opportunities for CPD are
actively encouraged and supported. You should be a good
team player with excellent interpersonal skills.

required benchmark you may be considered for an EO grade

HCPC registered
IBMS Specialist Diploma (from 2005) or IBMS fellowship in
Medical Microbiology.

STAGE 1 - APPLICATION & SIFT:
You will be required to complete an application form. This will be assessed in line with the advertised essential criteria – please do provide evidence of how you meet this.
The panel will assess if candidates meet the requirements of the role first, using a specific benchmark system. If your application falls below the HEO grade threshold, your application may be assessed against the lower grade role. If you are interviewed for the role and you do not meet the required benchmark you may be considered for an EO grade role.
If you are successful at this stage, you will progress to an interview.
STAGE 2 – INTERVIEW
This competition will involve an interview by video or onsite face to face.
As part of the process, candidates will be invited to interview which will involve an in-depth discussion of your previous experience and professional competence in relation to the criteria set out in the Person Specification.
Your Statement of Suitability should outline your skills, experience, and achievements, providing evidence of your suitability for the role, with reference to the essential criteria (outlined in the person specification section).
You will also be asked to provide information within the ‘Employer/ Activity history’ section of the application form. This is equivalent to the information you would provide on a CV, setting out your career history.
