The Microbiology department at the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS trust have some exciting opportunities following a significant investment to allow the service to grow and be able to provide a comprehensive 24/7 clinical diagnostic microbiology service. We have permanent posts within our Specialist Biomedical Scientists team.
The department is a recognised IBMS Training Centre with an excellent track record in producing high calibre Specialist Biomedical scientists in both Medical Microbiology and Virology.
We welcome applications from experienced Specialist Biomedical Scientists in Microbiology that are after a new challenge and would like to widen their portfolio of skills
As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, your main role is to carry out routine and specialist examination of samples using various technologies and to report or present the results as appropriate. You will be expected to assist the section manager (Team Leader) in the daily operation of the assigned section including the supervision of more junior State Registered BMS and support staff. You will rotate through all sections of the service including serology, bacteriology, parasitology, molecular microbiology and mycology.
You will have experience working in a UK Clinical Microbiology Laboratory and will be familiar with the IBMS Specialist Training portfolio's as you will be supporting junior staff undertaking these qualifications.

The Clinical Microbiology service is a comprehensive medical microbiology service handling in excess of 900,000 microbiology and virology samples per year. We are a well-established Institute of Biomedical Science training center providing a variety of professional qualifications for individuals that are able to demonstrate the key skills to progress within their microbiology career.
We are a large teaching hospital and therefore provide exposure to a wealth of microbiology. The experience gained whilst in Nottingham has provided individuals the confidence and experience to take on senior management roles within the National Health Service in addition to the private sector. In addition we have an excellent training culture and believe in talent management providing our staff opportunities to move up within our own service.
Please note this service is a 24/7 provision and therefore individuals must be flexible and able to work on all shifts including night shift provision

Working in the department you will use technology such as BD Bactec FX, Automated Antimicrobial susceptibility systems, Bruker Malditof analysers, BD MGIT 960, Abbott Alinity i immunoassay analysers, Abbott Alinity M & Aus Diagnostics molecular platforms, Altona Altostar and a variety of extraction systems.
