Senior Scientist – Synthetic Biology

Location: Cambridge

Contract: Full-time and permanent

Sector: Biotechnology

Salary: DOE £32,000 - £50,000

Our client is an innovative biotechnology company based outside of the centre of Cambridge. They have built a platform to synthesis DNA which provides exciting possibilities for ensuring cheaper, faster and more accurate DNA / gene constructs than traditional plasmid-based methods. They also have a range of early phase therapeutic products in their portfolio. In a key phase of their growth, our client is looking to onboard a highly experienced synthetic biologist on a full-time and permanent basis.

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity for an experienced scientist who has a strong background in synthetic biology, gene expression/editing in a range of bacterial and mammalian cell types who is looking for the next step in their career. As a Senior Scientist you will be responsible for:

  • Genetic modification and engineering of various cell lines (bacterial and mammalian) using techniques including CRISPR-Cas9.
  • Conducting general molecular biology experiments for a range of gene therapy / gene synthesis projects.
  • Plan, refine and execute experiments which align with overall project plans.
  • Work individually and collaboratively within the R&D teams.
  • Attending and participating in company training and meetings.
  • Troubleshooting new assays.

Skills and Experience Needed

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • PhD in a biological discipline + industry experience (ideal), or a BSc/MSc + several years’ of industry experience in gene expression.
  • Synthetic biology / gene editing expertise (CRISPR, TALENS, side-directed mutagenesis)
  • Expertise in gene construct creation (primer design, transfection, bacterial cell culture, plasmid amplification, DNA cloning etc) (essential).
  • Expertise in other molecular biology techniques including PCR (essential)
  • Experience in troubleshooting and developing laboratory protocols (desired)
  • Experience of AAV / nanoparticles within a drug delivery setting (desired)
  • Experience of primary cell culture (desired).
  • Excellent communication skills (essential).
