Job description

An exciting new opportunity has arisen within the ISO: 15189 accredited Immunology hub laboratory of Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS) to join the expanding laboratory team.
Based at St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey, the large laboratory also has 4 consultant Immunologists and 2 Specialist Registrars actively involved in the provision of the Immunology service (autoimmunity, allergy, protein electrophoresis and cellular). We are implementing new automated analytical systems including a shared track with Blood Sciences and Virology. We will also consider applications from candidates with experience of automated track systems and Blood Sciences.
You would be required to work 37.5 hours per week during core hours (9am – 5.30pm) Monday – Friday and be able and willing to cover Saturday mornings or early/late shifts if required.
We need a motivated, enthusiastic, and enterprising team player with great people skills, who is highly organised, flexible and dedicated to supporting our diagnostic pathology service, its users and our patients. Knowledge of laboratory-based computers and Quality Management systems is essential. You must also be able to demonstrate current evidence of CPD, contribution to service development and problem-solving skills, be able to work unsupervised, meeting deadlines, be flexible and adaptable and show that you are motivated and willing to develop your knowledge and skills.

Direct the work of a specialist laboratory section within the Immunology Department.
Be responsible for the most effective use of resources, both staff and non-staff in order to maintain the Department Service.
Supervise and perform the initial screening and further investigation of specialist diagnostic tests producing complex quality diagnostic results in order to aid patient treatment and care.
Use highly specialist knowledge, complex analysers and IT in order to deliver the Immunology service to our users.
Contribute to producing a high quality diagnostic service in Immunology.
Ensure the Immunology Department continues to produce high quality results as confirmed in UKAS accreditation.
To authorise analyse and interpret complex diagnostic results (own data and that of others) and report them using judgement, specialised knowledge and departmental guidelines. To refer to Lead BMS or Medical staff as required. Requesting further investigations as necessary.
To participate in the departmental training schemes and in maintaining training records for all BMSs and departmental support staff in association with the Lead BMS.

Professional
To work in an efficient and effective manner, organising own work and that of others. To participate in the production of the departments’ staff rosters.

To maintain skills in accuracy and precision (e.g. microscopy, pipetting) and to use them in order to produce high quality results.

Following professional (HCPC) and departmental guidelines offer specialist advice to clinicians regarding test results and any further analysis that could be performed.

To evaluate new methodologies and equipment in order to advance the service and to
produce and validate the operating procedures affecting both within and outside the
Pathology Department.

With the Lead BMS, to anticipate and plan for the departments development in order to deliver a modernising service responsive to users’ needs and National guidelines (NICE etc.).

To deputise for other Senior BMSs in their absence as directed by the Lead BMS and to deputise for the Lead BMS in their absence as directed by the Lead BMS or General Manager / Deputy General Manager.

Quality , clinical effectiveness, health and safety
To ensure that results and reports are produced in a timely manner particularly where these results will have an immediate impact on patient care such as an OPD clinic or A&E, thus contributing to meeting both departmental and Trust turnaround times.

To ensure abnormal results are communicated to the relevant clinician/ department as per guidelines and explain significance of the result

To follow Standard Operating Procedures and to regularly review and update them in
accordance to departmental guidelines or as directed by the Lead BMS.

To troubleshoot problems to an expert level on the Immunology analysers. To liaise with manufacturer regarding measures for their repair if the fault requires manufacturer’s attention.

To inform senior staff and service users where there may be a service interruption due to analyser / Quality control failure and with them, or independently, to direct the prioritisation of work until full service provision is re-established.

To review and organise the Quality Assurance systems within that section and to ensure these systems are followed by other staff.

Within the resources available, undertake or collaborate in appropriate audit, scientific and clinical research being undertaken by the department aimed at improving diagnosis and knowledge of the immunological basis of disease.

Personnel / Training
To train others in the correct use and maintenance of the Immunology departments analysers.

To be a member of the departmental training team developing and reviewing training needs.

To participate in the recruitment, training and appraisal of junior staff and in the maintenance of personnel records of all in the department with respect to annual leave and sick leave.

To play a role in ensuring that staff rotate throughout the various sections of the department where appropriate.

To attend departmental meeting and to positively contribute to departmental communication and development. Where appropriate to represent junior staff at meetings.

To set an example of good professional standards and to encourage and motivate junior staff to attain the same.

To monitor performance of BMS staff and support staff grades and ensure standards of performance and competence are maintained. Bringing any concerns to the attention of the Lead BMS.
