Job description

We are seeking a bioinformatic data analyst/manager to join Professor Rebecca Fitzgerald's team to work with a large and growing resource of sequencing data from patients with oesophageal cancer and precancerous conditions. The role holder will develop and implement automated workflows for the analyses of high throughput sequencing data generated by the Oesophageal Cancer Clinical and Molecular Stratification (OCCAMS) study and various Barrett's oesophagus studies. The role holder will also manage the sequencing data and resultant analyses in support of research projects carried out by members of Professor Fitzgerald's group, the OCCAMS Consortium, external collaborators, and the wider research community.

The Fitzgerald laboratory at the Early Cancer Institute is part of the Department of Oncology situated on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. This recently established institute provides an outstanding environment for cancer research, supporting 8 research groups and ~60 bench scientists. The ECI's focus is to conduct world-leading research to understand how cancers develop and seeks to translate this knowledge into new approaches and technologies for early diagnosis. The unit is a key part of the Cambridge Cancer Centre, providing an opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary collaborations with Cambridge colleagues in the biological, clinical, physical, chemical and engineering sciences.

Survival statistics for oesophageal adenocarcinoma are dismal and it is the fastest-rising cancer in the developed world. The majority of patients present with advanced disease and most patients who are treated with partial removal of the oesophagus or with oncological therapy do not benefit. The Fitzgerald group is focused on understanding how cancer of the oesophagus develops in order to develop better clinical tests for early detection, including investigation of the pre-malignant condition Barrett's oesophagus.

The role holder will play a key part within Professor Fitzgerald's team by providing the omics data which forms a vital part of much of this work. The successful candidate should have a strong background in data workflows, management, and analysis, and be able to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The position would suit someone seeking to build a career in production bioinformatics.

Informal enquiries are welcome and can be addressed to Ginny Devonshire ([email protected]).

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a security check.
